Status: Appendix D/Temporary Assignment (April 2026 – April 2027)

Hours: Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week

Home Campus: Fennell (hybrid work arrangements available)

Rate of Pay: Payband G (Start Rate: $ per hour, plus 8% in lieu of vacation and benefits)

Job Summary

The Graphic Designer assists the Marketing department’s creative team with the design and production of wide range of media. The incumbent will create unique mock-ups or concepts for new ideas or campaigns. The incumbent will build the full range of material required for a campaign – from graphics, print brochures, print and online ads, Microsoft Office documents, posters, billboards, eBlasts and online content.

The Graphic Designer has a strong understanding of online, web-based content techniques and requirements including HTML and responsive design, and can flow content and incorporate graphics online using a Content Management System (Drupal).

The incumbent follows the established Brand and Guidelines and overall college look/feel to determine the optimal layout of graphics and content to produce consistent, high quality materials. The incumbent understands the overall strategic goals of the Marketing & Recruitment department, as well as the college overall, and uses these goals to guide design decisions.

The incumbent oversees projects that require specialized skills such as animation and graphic motion including recruitment campaigns, special projects from areas such as the President’s Office and requests from across the college. The incumbent will work with the area / requestor to understand project objectives and develop the requirements, storyboard, look-and-feel etc.

The incumbent includes accessibility features (WCAG AA) into files of all media types for direct consumption by end users, and to streamline the process to repurpose documents for online consumption.

The incumbent maintains quality by running spellcheck, pre-flighting documents before print and ensuring work is proofed and approved by appropriate team members and other college staff. The incumbent reviews press-proofs for accuracy and quality.

The Graphic Designer responds to requests from tickets in a timely and accurate manner. The incumbent works with their manager and Traffic Coordinator to prioritize workload to ensure overall department and college goals are met. The incumbent communicates updates, changes and requirements with coworkers, clients and managers via Zendesk or in person.

What you’ll be doing:

Design and Production

  • Follows the principles of graphic design to build and present the highest quality material using the most up-to-date techniques.
  • Designs concepts/thumbnails/mockups based on direction provided, other campaigns already underway, or new ideas.
  • Produces a wide range of material required for a campaign including graphics, print brochures, print and online ads, Microsoft Office documents, posters, billboards, eBlasts and online content.
  • Incorporates content and graphics on the public website using a Content Management System (Drupal).
  • Uses complex software (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat Professional; Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, etc.) to create and maintain documents for print or online distribution.
  • Ensures all material created or edited meets the brand guidelines of the college.
  • Follows workflow to ensure files are proofed, spellchecked, reviewed and approved before printing or distribution.

Animation and Motion Graphics

  • Supports the marketing team and college departments with animation and motion graphic projects to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Works with areas / requestor to understand objectives, gather requirements, develop storyboards etc.
  • Leverages specialized software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Cinema 4D etc to create and edit projects.

Photo Editing and File Management

  • Refines, modifies and/or touches up appearance of photos to best suit end-use.
  • Optimizes photos using complex software for print or web use.
  • Organizes, edits, tags and uploads images in the Digital Asset Manager.

Accessibility

  • Applies accessibility principles and techniques to new document creation and the editing of existing documents to produce files that the majority of end users can consume in either print or digital format.
  • Uses tools available (Word accessibility checkers, Siteimprove) to evaluate and edit documents created to meet accessibility standards.
  • Works with web staff to remediate web-based PDFs to meet accessibility standards.

Communication and Support

  • Uses the department’s online ticketing system to respond to requests, track issues and document task completion.
  • Works with web staff to ensure look/feel and content of print and online material is aligned and accurate on both sides.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • A minimum of three years of post-secondary education in Graphic design or equivalent combination of relevant educational and practical experience.
  • Minimum five years of graphic design and production experience including a wide range of document and medium types (catalogues, flyers, advertisements, brochures, reports, digital ads, digital content, online web editing, Office document production etc.) and sizes (1 page up to 100+ of pages).
  • Strong understanding of accessible document principles, how to build accessible files and PDF remediation tools and techniques.
  • Copywriting experience is an asset.
  • Strong spelling and grammar skills are recommended.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
  • Minimum of five years of experience with computers (Mac environment) and advanced applications software:

oFor print and digital applications – Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Professional

oFor accessibility: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Acrobat Professional, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint

oFor web editing – experience with HTML-based applications (Dreamweaver) or online content management editing experience

oFor document production: Microsoft – Word, PowerPoint and other Office programs

oFor animation and motion graphics – Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects
