Job Information and Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Director Diversity, Inclusion and Wellness, the Return to Work and Accommodations Consultant:
- Develops and implements return to work guide, forms, template letters, policies, procedures and training for disability management and medical leaves of absence.
- Administers' activities associated with sick leave and attendance management:Monitors and follows up on extended absences, collaborates and liaises with employees, department and third-party health/service providers (as required). Ensures appropriate documentation is maintained.Advises department heads, managers, and employees regarding the policies and procedures for sick leave, long term disability, and other leaves of absences.Ensures Payroll is notified of leaves of absences in accordance with HR Policies and procedures.
- Initiates LTD claim procedures and documentation; notifies insurance carriers and monitors and assists with LTD claims and return to work programs.
- Facilities the successful return to work of injured employees by monitoring Workers' Compensation claims and provides support as needed to the management of worker's compensation claims.
- Develops individualized stay-at-work/return-to-work plans in collaboration with employee, supervisor, medical provider, disability insurer, and the applicable union.
- Maintains confidential medical records.
- Develops and delivers presentations, workshops, and related tools on return to work and disability management, as required.
- Serves as a subject matter expert on accommodation requests under Nova Scotia Human Rights Legislation.
- Develops and implements a workplace accommodation program enhancing existing procedures.
- Receives, evaluates and addresses employee accommodation requests including the validation of associated documentation while consulting with the Employee and Manager to ensure reasonable and appropriate accommodation.
- Educates team members and provides coaching for managers and Human Resources colleagues related to job accommodation process.
- Works with supervising managers to implement job modifications/accommodations.
- Collaborates with others to coordinate workplace accommodations.
- Maintains confidentiality, accuracy and integrity in the collection, processing and maintenance of personal information in accordance with HR policies.
- Maintains current statistics and produces reports as required.
- Works with the Director, Diversity Inclusion and Wellness in developing, coordinating, and implementing various projects.
- Oversees ongoing updates and appropriate development and distribution of materials including website content.
- Represents the University on various internal and external committees, such as the Accessibility Advisory Committee as required.
Experience and Education Requirements
To be the successful Return to Work and Accommodations Consultant you will have:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Minimum 3 years of recent and related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Knowledge and/or understanding of disability management procedures.
- Knowledge and/or understanding of Nova Scotia Human Rights Legislation and the Duty to Accommodate.
- Proven ability to promote collaborations and build relationships.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- High degree of cultural proficiency with a demonstrated track record of working effectively within and across equity-deserving communities.
- Excellent organization and time management skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office Products.
- Experience working in a unionized environment an asset.
