MFES is a team of dedicated professionals who provide a vast array of emergency and non-emergency services to the residents, businesses and visitors to the City of Mississauga. MFES is an all-hazards fire department that responds to all types of emergencies including high risk, water/ice rescue, confined space, and hazardous materials, to name a few. There is also the opportunity to meet the community to help with public education events and provide our fire and life safety messaging. Our mission is to protect life, property, and the environment in Mississauga from all risks through education, enforcement, engineering and emergency response.

MFES has more than 800 staff working across four sections, serving the community around the clock, to make this City a safe place. New hires, upon successful completion of training, will be assigned to the Operations section and work out of one of the City's fire stations, or any other section as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Here's What You Get to Do:

  • Provide exceptional customer service as a respected member of the community.
  • Respond to all emergencies when called upon including, but not limited to:
  • Medical – provide patient care, administer medical aid, CPR, defibrillation, symptom assist.
  • Firefighting – deploy hose lines, operate firefighting equipment, use hand and power tools, operate emergency vehicles and conduct pump operations.
  • Rescue – search and rescue, remove injured persons from dangerous environments.
  • Special Operations – vehicle rescue, hazardous materials response, water and ice rescue, rope rescue, elevator rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, machine rescue.
  • Apparatus and station maintenance.
  • Public Education – participate in the delivery of education programs and attend public events to promote fire safety awareness and responsibilities.
  • Fire Prevention – assess buildings for compliance with fire and life safety requirements, conduct pre-plans, familiarization and tactical site assessments.
  • Provide assistance in a vast array of non-emergency situations.
  • Participate in continuous training and learning to advance your knowledge and skill.
  • Work in accordance with the provisions of all applicable laws and regulations and all City of Mississauga corporate and departmental policies and procedures.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 18 years of age or older at time of application.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or academic equivalent. This position requires applicants with international credentials to provide a recognized credential evaluation report as part of the application process (WES, ICAS, ECA).
  • Must possess National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Firefighter I & II and NFPA 1072 (NFPA 472) Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations certifications or equivalent as recognized by the Authourity Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) (must have proof of Pro Board or IFSAC). Please note that successful completion of required NFPA certifications are required prior to the date of application submission.
  • Possess a valid and current Standard First Aid and CPR "C" certification, CPR BLS/HCP certificate or higher (e.g. EMR).
  • Possess a valid and unrestricted Ontario Class “D” driver’s license with a “Z” endorsement or equivalent (deemed equivalent by Ontario Ministry of Transportation), and a driving record that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga.
  • Provide a Level 3 Vulnerable Sector Screening that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga.
  • Successful completion of, but not limited to, behaviour/competency-based interviews, a medical assessment, practical assessments, behavioural assessments, York University Firefighter fitness assessment (scheduled by the City of Mississauga), other cognitive assessments as required, swim assessment and reference and background checks. Some assessments will be at the candidate’s expense.
  • Effective English communication skills and ability to communicate clearly and precisely in multiple situations.

Physical Requirements

  • Excellent hearing ability without the use of hearing aids.
  • Ability to swim proficiently (must pass the swim assessment).
  • Candidates must meet the vision requirements of NFPA 1582 which includes visual acuity, colour vision, binocular vision, peripheral vision and ocular health.
  • Ability to handle the intense and sustained physical effort necessary to safely perform firefighting duties.
  • Willingness to work 24-hour shifts on a rotating basis (including weekends, holidays etc.).

Customer Service

  • Act with integrity, solve complex problems, drive continuous improvement and provide excellent customer service.
  • Accept direction, work in a team environment, establish and maintain relationships and show caring and empathy towards others.
  • Maintain confidence and composure during stressful or traumatic situations.
  • Possess skills and strategies for managing the impacts of stress and maintaining work-life balance.
  • Demonstrate tenacity and perseverance during difficult situations and positively adapt to change.

Assets

  • College diploma or university degree in any discipline recognized by an accredited association, organization or institution.
  • Volunteer, humanitarian and/or community involvement experience of minimum one year (e.g. Habitat for Humanity, Firefighters Without Borders, community groups, Food Bank).
  • Trade apprenticeship certification or minimum of one year experience in skilled trades in any discipline recognized as a skilled trade in Ontario.
  • Minimum of one-year of previous experience as a volunteer, part-time or full-time firefighter.
  • Minimum of one-year of previous experience in emergency services other than fire suppression.
  • Minimum of one-year of previous experience operating large/heavy vehicles and/or heavy machinery operation.
  • Minimum of one-year of previous experience as an elevator technician, fire alarm technician, fire life safety technician, military or coast guard.
  • Possess National Lifeguard Services (NLS) certification.
  • Fluent in a second language other than English and French.
  • Occupational Health and Safety related training and certification (e.g. JHSC part 1 and 2).
  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification.
  • Experience in customer service and/or public service roles.
  • Experience competing at the Provincial, National or Professional level as an athlete.
  • Previous experience, training and certification in technical rescue (water, ice, trench, rope rescue, confined space rescue covered under NFPA 1006).
  • HAZMAT removal or private disaster management (i.e., chemical spills, environmental clean-up, mold, asbestos, biohazard, contamination clean up).

Recruitment Process
