Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Process Safety Engineer to support a major integrated energy and chemicals facility in Alberta.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the safety, reliability, and risk management of large-scale industrial operations, working closely with engineering, operations, and project teams.
The successful candidate will play a key role in process safety assurance, hazard analysis, and technical risk evaluation, helping strengthen safety barrier management across complex industrial systems.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Process Safety & Engineering Assurance
- Lead technical assurance activities for PRV/PVSV sizing and relief scenario analysis.
- Apply expertise in hydraulics and flare system design principles.
- Review P&IDs, mechanical flow diagrams, and cause-and-effect matrices.
- Support the development of technically sound equipment specifications with EPC partners.
Hazard Reviews & Risk Assessment
- Facilitate HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, and SIL assessments.
- Lead 5-year unit revalidation HAZOPs and project PHAs.
- Evaluate Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) and safety layer performance.
Advanced Process Safety Modeling
- Perform fire, explosion, and dispersion modeling using tools such as PHAST or FRED.
- Identify credible scenarios to support risk mitigation strategies.
Operational Engagement
- Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, and Project teams to strengthen barrier management.
- Provide coaching and guidance on process safety hazards and operational risk controls.
Reporting & Leadership Assurance
- Develop technical reports with findings, recommendations, and action plans.
- Present ALARP assessments and risk tolerability results to senior stakeholders.
Continuous Improvement
- Promote lessons learned and process safety best practices.
- Apply human factors, operability, and maintainability principles to improve design quality.
Required Qualifications
- BSc in Chemical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
- 7+ years of experience in Process Safety or Process Engineering.
- Experience within refining, petrochemicals, or energy operations.
- Minimum 3 years facilitating HAZOP/LOPA reviews.
- Experience with UniSim, HYSYS, and Flarenet.
- Experience with dispersion or explosion modeling tools (PHAST, FRED, or similar).
- Strong knowledge of API 520/521, API 537, API 754, ASME Section VIII.
- Excellent facilitation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
