Director, Mechanical Operations (Rail / Locomotive Services) Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Position Overview We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Director of Mechanical Operations to lead regional locomotive and rolling stock maintenance functions. This role is responsible for driving operational excellence, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing asset reliability across all mechanical service activities.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in locomotive systems, combined with proven leadership in managing teams, budgets, and performance outcomes within a rail or heavy equipment environment.
Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development - Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team of mechanics, technicians, and support staff
- Foster a culture centered on safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Provide ongoing training, coaching, and performance management
Operations & Maintenance Management - Oversee all maintenance, inspection, and repair activities for locomotives and rolling stock
- Ensure equipment reliability, availability, and lifecycle optimization
- Develop and implement maintenance strategies, schedules, and asset performance programs
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management - Ensure full compliance with Canadian rail regulations and safety standards
- Conduct risk assessments and implement proactive safety controls
- Promote environmental responsibility in line with company policies and local regulations
Financial & Business Performance - Maintain full accountability for operational budgets and financial performance (P&L)
- Control costs related to labor, materials, and inventory
- Oversee parts procurement, inventory management, and usage tracking
- Ensure accurate invoicing and timely financial processing
Customer & Stakeholder Management - Build and maintain strong relationships with customers and industry partners
- Ensure high levels of service delivery, responsiveness, and long-term client satisfaction
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations, engineering, HR, and safety
Continuous Improvement & Innovation - Identify and implement process improvements and best practices
- Evaluate and adopt new technologies to enhance operational efficiency
- Drive initiatives to improve service quality, productivity, and cost-effectiveness
Qualifications & Requirements Technical & Industry Experience - Minimum 5+ years of experience in locomotive mechanical operations
- Certified or qualified Locomotive Mechanic or Electrician
- Strong knowledge of locomotive systems, rolling stock, and repair methodologies
Education - Associate degree, diploma, or technical certification in a related field
Leadership & Business Skills - Proven experience leading and developing technical teams
- Strong background in budgeting, cost control, and operational planning
- Experience with maintenance planning or asset management systems is an asset
Additional Requirements - Valid driver's license
