About Us

The Department of Public Works is responsible for building and maintaining provincial infrastructure across Nova Scotia; we are currently recruiting for an Area Manager to lead our District Highway Operations in Hants County.

Public Works manages 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4,100 bridges, 9 provincial ferries, and 2,400 buildings and infrastructure assets. Our District Highway Operations Division plays a critical role in managing various programs, functions and activities throughout our province, including snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services and approval of various permits.

About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the District Director, the Area Manager is directly involved in creating and designing new programs to meet the demands of our growing infrastructure and ever-changing work environment. Area Managers are pivotal in helping achieve Department objectives for highway maintenance, snow and ice control, and infrastructure expansion projects.

Primary Accountabilities

Through the effective leadership of staff and coordination of technical and equipment resources, the Area Manager provides opportunities for safe traffic movement and economic development across the Province.

You will manage such areas as:

  • the delivery of highway and bridge maintenance;
  • traffic safety and acceptable roadway services; and
  • the implementation of cost sharing agreements and other Department programs.

You will interact regularly with municipal, provincial and federal department representatives, along with utilities, developers, the public and other external stakeholders regarding highway maintenance, access management, and commercial/residential development.

Qualifications and Experience

A Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering plus several years of directly related experience in construction and/or maintenance of public infrastructure is required. Registration as a Professional Engineer (or eligiblity for membership) with Engineers Nova Scotia is required. Other engineering disciplines will be considered based on relevant experience.

Frequent travel across the province is a component of this position; as such, a valid driver’s license is required.

You must demonstrate knowledge of heavy equipment, along with proficiency in a computerized environment; including spreadsheet software and creation, word processing and email applications.

You must have previous experience with:

  • managing staff performance;
  • budgets and financial reporting; and
  • administering acts, regulations, policies and procedures, collective agreements, and specifications containing technical elements.

The ability to communicate both verbally and in writing are key components of this position. You will be required to build relationships and demonstrate leadership qualities which promote teamwork; communicating vision and fostering a safe work culture that encourages new ideas and innovative solutions.

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
