Location: Toronto, ON - in-office (with flexibility). Quarterly travel to the project site in Northwestern Ontario.
Compensation: Up to $175-$185k base
THE OPPORTUNITY
This is not a maintenance role. It's a build role.
A well-capitalized mining company at the development stage is looking for a VP Finance to serve as the financial architect of a multi-year, large-scale mine construction project in Northern Ontario. You will arrive before the infrastructure exists, and leave having built it.
The CFO is a seasoned operator. The CEO is engaged. And the company is at the kind of inflection point where the right finance leader has the opportunity to shape policy, process, reporting, and controls from the ground up, with direct access to leadership and meaningful visibility into a high-profile project.
If you thrive in ambiguity, know what project controls look like during a real mine build, and have the technical depth to own IFRS reporting, audit relationships, and capital budgeting simultaneously... this role was designed for you.
WHY THIS ROLE
- Rare greenfield mandate - you're building the finance function, not inheriting someone else's
- Direct access to C-suite and visibility into a landmark Northern Ontario mine development
- A natural trajectory toward CFO for the right person willing to demonstrate range and ownership
- Competitive base compensation with performance bonus - and a company that has the capital to execute its plan
- Toronto-based with quarterly travel to site - no relocation required
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
Project Finance & Controls
- Lead the development and execution of project controls for the mine build, cost management, schedule oversight, risk management, and performance measurement against contract milestones
- Build and maintain comprehensive financial models, capital budgets, and project forecasts from scratch
- Work directly alongside the project and construction team to ensure financial objectives stay on track throughout the build
- Design and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls, many of which do not yet exist
Corporate Finance & Reporting
- Oversee the preparation and presentation of quarterly and annual financial statements in compliance with IFRS standards
- Manage the full audit cycle - external auditors (including a Big 4 relationship), tax advisors, and other financial consultants
- Maintain capital asset inventory, coordinate asset valuations, and ensure accurate amortization reporting
- Prepare, monitor, and deliver operating and capital budget reports on a monthly basis
Leadership & Strategic Finance
- Participate in investor and lender conversations alongside the CFO - providing financial analysis that supports capital market relationships
- Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of an ERP system - a priority initiative for the business
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to senior management to inform key business decisions
- Develop and mentor the finance team as the function grows with the business
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Non-negotiables:
– CPA designation
– 10+ years in finance, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role specifically within the mining industry
– Hands-on project controls experience during a mine development or construction phase - not just operational finance
– Proven ability to build financial infrastructure from the ground up - policies, models, reporting frameworks
– Deep understanding of IFRS reporting standards, capital markets, and mining finance
– A builder's mindset: you write the playbook; you don't wait for one to arrive
Strong differentiators:
– Experience working at a development-stage or pre-production mining company
– ERP implementation or selection experience
– Comfort operating as a lean, senior-level individual contributor without a team underneath you - at least initially
– Track record of working closely with CEOs and CFOs in a high-trust, high-visibility capacity
