Position Overview:

The Fuel Farm Operator is responsible for the safe operation of the airport fuel storage facility and for ensuring aviation fuel quality meets all regulatory, airline, and company standards. This role monitors fuel storage systems, performs fuel quality testing, manages fuel inventory, and supports aircraft fueling operations by maintaining a reliable supply of compliant aviation fuel.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Including but not limited to):

Fuel Farm Operations

  • Operate and monitor fuel storage tanks, pumps, valves, and hydrant systems within the airport fuel farm.
  • Receive, transfer, and distribute aviation fuel to fueling trucks and hydrant systems.
  • Monitor fuel levels and maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Coordinate fuel deliveries with suppliers and ensure proper fuel transfer procedures are followed.

Fuel Quality Control and Assurance

  • Conduct routine fuel quality tests in accordance with aviation fuel standards.
  • Perform checks for contaminants such as water, particulates, and microbial growth.
  • Collect fuel samples and maintain proper documentation of test results.
  • Ensure fuel meets required specifications before distribution to aircraft fueling operations.
  • Quarantine or report fuel that does not meet quality standards.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all aviation fuel safety procedures, environmental regulations, and operational standards.
  • Ensure compliance with airport authority requirements and fuel handling regulations.
  • Conduct inspections of tanks, pipelines, containment systems, and safety equipment.
  • Respond to fuel spills, emergencies, or operational incidents according to established procedures.

Equipment Monitoring and Maintenance

  • Perform routine inspections of fuel farm equipment, including pumps, meters, filtration systems, and storage tanks.
  • Identify and report maintenance issues to ensure system reliability and safety.
  • Performs periodic and scheduled filter changes operating the loading rack, pulling of fluids from valve pits and hydrant outlets.
  • Support preventive maintenance programs for fuel storage and distribution infrastructure.

Documentation and Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate records of fuel receipts, transfers, quality tests, and inventory levels.
  • Complete regulatory and operational documentation related to fuel storage and handling.
  • Prepare daily operational reports and communicate any operational concerns to supervisors.

Operational Support

  • Coordinate with management and aircraft fuelers to maintain efficient fueling operations.
  • Ensure fuel availability to support airline schedules and ramp operations.
  • Assist with operational troubleshooting and fuel system management when required.
  • Perform the duties of Aircraft Fueler or Dispatcher as needed.
  • To accomplish any other tasks that may, from time to time, be assigned by management.


Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to operate fueling vehicles.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain airport security clearance and required certifications.
  • 2–5 years of experience in aviation fueling, fuel storage operations, or petroleum handling preferred.
  • Knowledge of aviation fuel standards and fuel quality control procedures.


Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Successful completion of all classroom and on-the-job training.
  • Basic computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft programs (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Strong attention to detail and safety awareness.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced airport environment.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and unit conversions, to accurately determine fuel quantities and complete fueling documentation.
  • Ability to follow procedures and documentation requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and communicate effectively in English.
  • Knowledge of fuel testing procedures and contamination control.
  • Mechanical aptitude for operating and inspecting fuel systems.
  • Strong recordkeeping and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and respond to operational issues.


Work Environment:

  • Outdoor fuel farm or airport ramp environment with exposure to varying weather conditions
  • Exposure to fuel handling equipment, storage tanks, and fuel transfer systems.
  • Shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull objects up to 75 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds regularly.
  • Frequent standing and walking throughout the fuel farm or on airport ramps for extended periods during shifts.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders and elevated surfaces.
  • Manual dexterity and hand strength to operate valves, pumps, gauges, testing equipment, handle heavy fueling hoses, and connectors.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and reach while inspecting pipelines, filtration systems, containment areas, connecting fueling equipment to aircraft.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including rain, wind, snow, heat, and cold.
  • Ability to work in industrial environments around fuel tanks, pumps, and heavy equipment while following strict safety procedures.
  • Ability to work safely around aircraft engines, fuel equipment, and moving ground vehicles.
  • Good vision and depth perception to safely operate fueling equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to hear and respond to alarms, radios and operational communications.
  • Ability to safely access confined or restricted areas of the fuel farm when required for inspections or maintenance.
  • Ability to operate fueling vehicles and equipment, including climbing in and out of fuel trucks multiple times during a shift.
