Job description

Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Director of Human Resources, this position will proactively coordinate disability management files, assessing any barriers to ensure timely, effective and successful return-to-work plans. The Disability and Wellness Coordinator will collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure compliance with applicable legislation while promoting a culture of health and wellness in coordinating Workplace Wellness programs.

The incumbent requires a high level of energy, organizational skills, initiative and independent judgment in the performance of varied wellness and disability management duties that are highly confidential in nature.

As a member of the Saint John Police administration team, this member must understand the vision, mission, and leadership principles of the Saint John Police and promote our organizational values of leadership, accountability, professionalism, inclusiveness, integrity and valour.

Successful completion of the security clearance and integrity interview are requirements of the Saint John Police.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Disability Management

•Administer and coordinate non-occupational and occupational claims, ensuring timely and accurate processing as part of a return to work or duty to accommodate program.
• Serve as a liaison between employees, managers, healthcare providers and insurance partners to support return-to-work plans.
• Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, policies, standard operating procedures and reporting requirements.
• Assist employees when they are off work or at risk of being off work for health reasons; provide direction in completion of required documentation.
• Ensure employees’ disability management files are maintained, stored securely and remain confidential.
• Educate employees and management on disability inclusion, reasonable accommodations, and best practices.
• Respond to numerous daily inquiries either by walk-in, telephone and/or email.
• Conduct timely assessments, schedule and attend return to work meetings with employees, managers and external stakeholders to facilitate discussions, ensuring accommodations are effective.
• Prepare and maintain monthly and quarterly reports, tracking types of leaves and return to work programs.
• Attend and participate in discussions on various return-to-work committees.

Wellness

• Foster a culture of health and well-being across the organization by coordinating wellness days, incentive challenges and educational campaigns.
• Be an active member of committees ( wellness and fit for duty).
• Deliver wellness educational sessions for new and current employees.
• Collaborate with City of Saint John Human Resources department related to wellness initiatives.
• Coordinate and be present for all required ergonomic assessments in the workplace.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Essential Qualifications:

• Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing, including the preparation of clear, concise and thorough reports.
• Strong interpersonal and listening skills to assist employees facing difficulty and stressful circumstances in a professional and compassionate manner.
• Effective planning, organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to work well both independently and as a member of a team.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Work, Outlook).
• Strong knowledge of New Brunswick Workers’ Compensation Act, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Human Rights Act.
• High level of discretion, confidentiality and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
• Solid working knowledge of, and background in, mental health wellness promotion in individuals and organizations.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

• Post-secondary education with a concentration in Human Resources, or related field.
• Three years’ experience in health and wellness, disability management or related field.
• Certified Disability Management Professional Certification is an asset and/or additional course work in occupational health, rehabilitation, or legislation related to disability management.
• Must have or be able to attain Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation.
• A proficiency in French of Intermediate (2) as per the Province of New Brunswick Oral Proficiency Rating Scale would be an asset.
