Job description
Overview
At KPMG in Canada, our people bring their unique perspectives to Canada's most important challenges. Here, you can build momentum that reaches beyond our business, develop skills for the future, and take ownership of your career with support at every stage. Join a firm where your career can make a difference.

The Research and Development (R&D) Tax Incentives Services practice brings together a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, accountants, and tax professionals. Together, we support our clients in obtaining tax credits and other tax benefits related to various incentive programs, including the Canadian Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program-one of the largest of its kind in the country-as well as the U.S. R&D tax credit.

Our team provides specialized advisory services to support multinational corporations and mid-sized companies across a broad range of scientific and technological sectors in bringing their innovation and R&D visions to life. We help them optimize their R&D tax credit claims, leverage other tax incentives available through federal and provincial government programs for their projects, and establish and maintain structured internal processes to sustainably support their activities.

KPMG is currently seeking a professional with a passion for technology and science to join its Tax Incentives Services practice in Montreal, at the level of Manager or Senior Manager.

This opportunity is intended for an experienced tax incentives professional looking to further advance their career; or a seasoned engineering or science professional seeking a career transition into a consulting and advisory role.

What you will do
  • Monitor emerging technologies and trends in science and engineering to inform engagement analysis and client recommendations.
  • Analyze clients' technological environments (products, processes, architecture, testing, iterations) to assess the eligibility of activities under the SR&ED program and/or other incentive programs.
  • Define project eligibility frameworks and build robust technical/scientific arguments (technological uncertainty, advancement, systematic work, evidence) to support claims.
  • Manage engagements end-to-end: plan, organize, and execute multiple mandates while meeting timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Lead client relationships by developing trusted relationships at multiple levels (R&D, finance, executive leadership), proactively managing expectations, and contributing to the identification of value-added opportunities.
  • Oversee the preparation of technical/scientific deliverables related to SR&ED claims for clients across a wide range of scientific and technological sectors.
  • Prepare and facilitate technical interviews and workshops (remote and in person) to identify eligible projects, gather critical information, and validate documentation.
  • Draft and document engineering/scientific projects in accordance with SR&ED program guidelines, ensuring consistency, traceability, and defensibility of submissions.
  • Support clients and internal teams during Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) reviews, including preparing responses, consolidating supporting documentation, and participating in meetings.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by developing tools, templates, and reports, and by optimizing processes to enhance operational efficiency and deliverable quality.

What you bring to the role
  • University degree in engineering (chemical, process, pulp and paper, environmental, biopharmaceutical, electrical/computer) or in another relevant scientific discipline; a graduate degree is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of industry experience, with demonstrated ability to address complex technical challenges and deliver results in demanding environments.
  • Experience with and knowledge of the Canadian SR&ED program and/or U.S. R&E tax credits is a strong asset, including an understanding of compliance, documentation, and claim defensibility requirements.
  • Strong analytical and synthesis skills applied to projects, including technological positioning, activity qualification, assessment of technological uncertainty, financial evaluation of eligible work and expenditures, and validation of compliance with program criteria.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both French and English, with the ability to adapt messaging to a variety of stakeholders (R&D, finance, tax, executive leadership).
  • Leadership in technical discussions, with the ability to structure and facilitate interviews to identify root causes, clarify innovation objectives, document hypotheses and iterations, and understand key R&D development concepts.
  • Curiosity, rigor, and a commitment to continuous learning, with a strong willingness to develop new skills through research, analysis, and rapid adoption of diverse and/or emerging technologies.
  • Ability to manage multiple client priorities, including planning, prioritization, and efficient execution to meet tight deadlines while maintaining a high level of quality and consistency in deliverables.
  • Strong client orientation and advisory mindset, with the ability to understand client business models, build strong relationships, manage expectations, and deliver value-added recommendations.
  • Strong business acumen and growth mindset, demonstrated through a proactive, adaptable, and solution-oriented approach, with the ability to identify opportunities (process improvement, engagement expansion, optimization of effort and profitability) and contribute to the growth of the practice.
The Successful Candidate Will Have the Opportunity To:
  • Access a diverse portfolio of engagements and gain exposure to cutting-edge technologies and high-potential innovations across multiple sectors.
  • Rapidly expand expertise by combining technical analysis, business insight, and the delivery of value-added recommendations.
  • Develop and lead strategic client relationships by interacting with stakeholders at all levels (R&D, finance, executive leadership) and proactively managing expectations.
  • Contribute directly to Canada's competitiveness and innovation ecosystem by supporting organizations in structuring, documenting, and maximizing the value of their R&D activities.

A high level of proficiency in English is required for this role to ensure effective communication with English-speaking clients and ongoing collaboration with teams located outside of Quebec. The successful candidate will also be required to draft and interpret legislation in both French and English.
