Job description

Power the Future of the Columbia Basin – Join Us as an Occupational Health & Safety Lead

Columbia Basin Trust is seeking an Occupational Health & Safety Lead. This position plays a lead role in the ongoing evolution and expansion of the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Management System, providing field-level coaching and oversight, leading inspections, incident investigations, and safety training. This position drives continuous improvement in safety performance, systems, and culture across the Power Operations Department.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in Castlegar, where you'll enjoy a collaborative and supportive team environment and the unique lifestyle of the West Kootenay region.

Salary Range: $100,600 - $118,200

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Environment, Health & Safety, you will:

  • Maintain and improve the Environment, Health & Safety Management System, develop safe work procedures, conduct hazard analyses, and maintain risk registers to ensure regulatory and corporate compliance.
  • Coordinate regulatory submissions, inspections, audits, and corrective actions, and review contracts and purchase orders to verify adequate risk controls.
  • Provide regular field support through site visits, inspections, training, hazardous‑material sampling, and verification of safety controls in job plans.
  • Deliver subject‑matter expertise on confined space, lockout/tagout (LOTO), high‑energy isolation, fall protection, spill response, and contractor safety management.
  • Lead and facilitate incident and near‑miss investigations; track corrective actions; and support emergency preparedness, drills, and Emergency Response Plan (ERP) updates.
  • Provide on‑site safety support during outages, including spill response, oil‑transfer monitoring, waste management, and first aid.
  • Develop and coordinate Environment, Health & Safety training programs and maintain safety records, training matrices, and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) inventories.
  • Track and report key performance indicators (KPIs), analyze safety trends, and support communications, lessons learned, and continuous improvement initiatives.

What We're Looking For

  • A bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • 5 years of OHS experience in a utility, power generation, or heavy industrial environment; hydroelectric experience is an asset.
  • Current professional OHS certification such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) or the ability to become certified immediately (i.e., within 6 months of hire).
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence with an acceptable driving record.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 3 (OFA 3) or Advanced First Aid certification is an asset.

Why Join Us?

  • Collaborative Culture: Work in a dedicated, accountable and professional environment.
  • Professional Growth: Access training and development opportunities.
  • Compensation and Benefits: Enjoy competitive compensation and a robust benefits package, featuring generous time‑off provisions with at least 20 paid vacation days, flex time provisions and a valuable defined benefit pension plan.
  • Work-Life Balance: Spend more time enjoying the lifestyle, recreation and culture of the West Kootenay region with a 35-hour work week.
