Job Description

What is the opportunity?

As a Wills and Trusts Resource Consultant, you will be part of a principal resource facility dedicated to providing technical assistance, analysis, and recommendations to Canadian Wealth Management partners on estate and trust accounts, powers of attorney, protection mandates, incapacity matters, and disbursement issues. This position supports revenue generation and client retention by enhancing the client experience on estate settlements and the opening of new estate and trust accounts. You will also help minimize risk and promote consistency in business practices across Canadian Wealth Management. This opportunity is an 18-month contract with full-time hours.

What will you do?

  • Critically analyze estate, trust, power of attorney, and incapacity documentation received from the business related to the opening or change to relevant accounts to identify issues and to provide a standardized summary of relevant information for the business’ ongoing use, utilizing knowledge of relevant jurisdictional laws and principles (civil law and common law).
  • Research and analyze estate, trust, and incapacity issues raised by the Canadian Wealth Management operational business units.
  • Make reasoned and informed recommendations to the business with the Senior Manager relating to the support of trust, estate, and incapacity issues, including, but not limited to, proper disbursements, succession of trustees, issues related to registered plans, disputes and complaints regarding a specific account, and all related issues surrounding trust and estate accounts.
  • Review waiver of probate exception requests and provide a risk analysis and recommendation summary to the business.
  • Prioritize escalation of estate, trust, and incapacity account issues based on urgency of the issue to provide timely recommendations.
  • Identify business/legal risks on any account submitted to this resource group (WTRG) and escalate issue to the Senior Manager and to the appropriate resource function.
  • Play an active role in developing relationships with Canadian Wealth Management Operations and providing a positive client experience.
  • Work with a team of professionals to identify trends in the business and suggest solutions and develop processes to address challenges.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)
  • 2+ years’ experience in the estate and trust industry
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Bilingualism (English and French) required, as you will regularly do business with RBC partners and/or employees across Canada with English and French speaking needs
  • Demonstrated ability to self-manage, think independently, and analyze complex issues
  • Willingness to participate in continued learning of both civil and common law estate and trust concepts and principles

Nice-to-have

  • MTI or TEP designation
  • Master of Laws in Notarial Law (LL.M.)
  • Knowledge of common law principles and their application in estate and trust matters
  • Membership in good standing with the Chambre des notaires du Québec or Barreau du Québec

What’s in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • Leaders who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities
  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team
  • Opportunities to do challenging work
