Title:Technician, Engineering R&D
Client: Biotechnology company
Contract/Perm & duration: 12-month contract (possibility of extension/conversion)
Location: Downtown Toronto, Onsite Monday- Friday
Pay Rate: $25-30/hr (T4)
Description of Position:
The candidate will support the engineering R&D team by assembling and testing prototypes, and providing feedback into recommended design and process modifications. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with hands-on experience and enjoys working individually and as part of a team. Collaboration with a highly motivated, world-class team of engineers and scientists promises an exciting and engaging work environment for motivated, self-starting candidates. Experience with mechanical device assembly and testing is required. Familiarity with design verification and validation testing is a plus.
Responsibilities:
·Support the development of medical devices and laboratory equipment and consumables by executing assigned tasks under guidance from engineers and scientists.
·Perform hands-on lab activities including device assembly, prototyping, component fabrication, rework, and test setup and execution.
·Assist with the creation and maintenance of engineering documentation, such as drawings, DHF docs, bills of materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, and inspection forms.
·Help support prototype builds and test builds in the lab, including coordinating activities with internal teams and external vendors when directed.
·Execute engineering experiments and verification tests according to established protocols, paying close attention to detail and accurately recording data and observations.
·Assist in the setup, operation, and maintenance of lab equipment and test fixtures, ensuring equipment readiness and proper documentation.
·Support manufacturing and pilot build activities by executing hands-on assembly operations and following approved procedures to support daily workflow.
·Work with senior team members to collect, organize, and summarize experimental and test data for reports and presentations.
·Follow established quality, safety, and documentation procedures, including design controls and good documentation practices.
·Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and biology teams, to support day-to-day lab and development activities.
·Assist with interactions with suppliers and third-party vendors by helping prepare materials, parts, or documentation as needed.
·Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve lab workflows, test methods, and equipment organization.
·Perform general lab support tasks such as inventory tracking, material preparation, labeling, and organizing workspaces.
Minimum Requirements:
·Associate degree or equivalent experience with electromechanical or medical device technology (0–3 years of in a laboratory, R&D, or manufacturing environment). Co-op, internship, or academic lab experience acceptable.
·Able to utilize computer-based equipment control and data collection systems
·Strong attention to detail
·0–3 years of experience in a laboratory, R&D, or manufacturing environment (co-op, internship, or academic lab experience acceptable).
·Basic familiarity with medical device development or regulated environments is a plus, but not required.
·Experience or coursework involving hands-on lab work, such as device assembly, prototyping, testing, or fabrication.
·Ability to follow written procedures and protocols carefully and maintain accurate records.
·Exposure to CAD software (SolidWorks or similar) preferred but not required; willingness to learn is essential.
·Comfortable using common laboratory tools, fixtures, and measurement equipment.
·Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assigned tasks with guidance and supervision.
·Effective verbal and written communication skills for documenting work and collaborating with team members.
·Demonstrated curiosity, reliability, and enthusiasm for learning new technical skills in an R&D setting.
·Working knowledge of measurement equipment such as vision systems, manual height gages, general inspection tools.
·Knowledge of design control systems such as ISO 13485 and FDA Quality System Regulation nice to have.
