Job description
The short version: We need a UE engineer who can jump between gameplay, networking, tools, and optimization — not an expert in everything, but someone who ramps fast, solves problems across unfamiliar systems, and knows when to go deep versus when to unblock and move on. This role requires hands-on Unreal Engine development experience. If you haven't worked in UE professionally, this isn't the right fit — but we'd love to hear from you for future roles. 🎯 The Opportunity Ironbelly Studios has contributed to over 300 projects - from Batman to PUBG to indie titles! We're building a competitive extraction shooter in UE5 - the kind of project where tight gunplay, sub-frame networking precision, and performance across PC and console all matter. The game also features player-owned economies, bringing innovation to how players engage with the loot-and-extract loop. We need an Developer who's comfortable being uncomfortable - someone who can context-switch between systems, read unfamiliar code quickly, ask the right questions, and deliver solutions. 💼 What Your Week Might Look Like On any given week, you might: Debug a replication issue causing desyncs in multiplayer Optimize a gameplay system that's spiking frame times Integrate middleware the audio team needs connected Extend an editor tool to unblock content creators Investigate a platform-specific crash on console builds You won't own every system. You'll be the engineer who can unstick any system. Your value is versatility — the ability to move between domains, identify root causes quickly, and ship solutions that keep the project moving forward. Over time, you'll naturally develop deeper expertise in 1-2 areas based on project needs and your interests. We support and encourage that growth. 🔧 Core Responsibilities Move between gameplay, networking, UI, tools, and optimization challenges as the project demands Identify performance bottlenecks and execute low-level optimization across PC and console Integrate third-party middleware and build editor tools that accelerate content creation workflows Contribute to architectural decisions and participate in code reviews across the codebase Collaborate with designers, artists, and specialist engineers to solve cross-disciplinary problems ✅ What You Bring Required — Non-Negotiable: 3+ years developing with Unreal Engine (UE4/UE5) in a professional setting Solid C++ fundamentals and comfort navigating large codebases, including UE source Hands-on experience across at least 3 of these areas: gameplay systems, UI (UMG/Slate), multiplayer/networking, tools/editor extensions, performance optimization, platform integration Shipped at least 1 commercial game in an development/programming/engineering role Strong debugging instincts — you enjoy hunting down problems in unfamiliar systems Comfort with ambiguity; you don't need a spec to start investigating Strong Plus: Multiplayer game development experience (replication, netcode, client prediction) Console platform experience (PS5, Xbox) Prior work on competitive or shooter titles Experience with build systems or CI/CD pipelines This role is NOT a fit if: Your UE experience is limited to personal projects or tutorials You're a web/mobile developer looking to transition into games (we support career changers, but this senior role requires proven UE experience) You're primarily a blockchain/Web3 engineer interested in the player economy layer (that's a different team) 📍 Location Hybrid role based in Montreal, Quebec. Exceptional candidates in Canada may be considered but local candidates will be prioritized.
