Every day, more than 80 000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your welding expertise in a cutting‑edge field. You’ll work alongside skilled and collaborative teammates.

You’ll play a key role in ensuring and performing the ETCS installation and vehicle brake modification, contributing to the transformation of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Areas (GTHA) transit system. Day‑to‑day, you’ll work closely with teams across the business (installation supervisors, project site managers, and design teams), ensure compliance with safety standards, and provide proactive suggestions for process improvements, and much more.

You’ll specifically take care of maintaining updated electrical schematics and troubleshooting electrical faults, but also contribute to the development of test plans to validate system modifications.

  • Strict adherence to Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) procedures and policies
  • Confirming installation readiness and ensuring activities are performed without deviations
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding specifications
  • Perform MIG, TIG, and Stick welding on various metals including steel, aluminium, and stainless steel
  • Perform soldering on various other metals including but not limited to copper piping
  • Prepare materials and surfaces for welding by cleaning, cutting, and grinding
  • Inspect welds for accuracy and quality, ensuring compliance with safety and engineering standards
  • Maintain and operate welding equipment and tools (manual and semi‑automatic) safely and efficiently
  • Collaborate with installation teams/supervisors to align welding tasks with project timelines
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards during all phases of welding work
  • Not limited to welding, should be able to perform mechanical installations and retrofits on rail vehicles, including brackets, piping, enclosures, and structural components
  • Ensuring compliance with design documentation and supervisor instructions
  • Reporting risks, deviations, or issues that may impact safety, quality, or performance
  • Using APSYS (Alstom Performance System) tools or templates for continuous improvement

All about you

We value passion and attitude over experience. That’s why we don’t expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we’ve listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:

  • Diploma or certification in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field.
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of a Welder Apprenticeship Program is an asset and/or skilled trade certification from Ontario (desirable).
  • Hold or capable of obtaining valid CSA W47.1 ticket issued by Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) as per the following requirements:
    • Mode of Transfer: Globular
    • Mode: Manual
    • Class: OVERHEAD, sometimes referred to as "O" or "4GF" or "4F"
    • Material: Carbon Steel
    • Process: SMAW
    • Electrode (group): F4
    • Classification: "FW", "S" or "T" are all acceptable
  • Experience in railway, transit, or heavy vehicle mechanical systems preferred.
  • Experience with fitment of pneumatic systems, brake valves, pressure switches and various types of pipes (pneumatic brake & cable protection).
  • Knowledge of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multi‑disciplinary teams.

Things you’ll enjoy

Join us on a life‑long transformative journey – the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You’ll also:

• Enjoy stability, challenges and a long‑term career free from boring daily routines.

• Work with new security standards for rail signalling.

• Collaborate with transverse teams and helpful colleagues.

• Contribute to innovative projects.

• Utilise our inclusive and flexible working environment.

• Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries.

• Benefit from our investment in your development, through award‑winning learning.

• Progress towards roles such as Senior Technician or Team Leader.

• Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognises your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, pension).
