Your Opportunity
BDO Canada’s Indirect Tax practice is seeking a manager to join our growing Customs and International Trade Services (CITS) team. This role is net new role that is advisory-focused and will support complex tariff, origin, valuation, and trade remedy matters across a national client base.
We are looking for a technically strong customs professional who can work directly with clients to navigate challenging customs matters and manage disputes arising from customs audits and help develop defense strategies.
Your Responsibilities
As part of BDO’s CITS team, you will:
Advise clients on surtax/tariff exposure, customs compliance, and trade strategy across Canadian and U.S. regimes
Analyze classification, valuation, origin, and trade remedy risks
Develop defensible technical positions and draft advisory memoranda
Lead and support clients through CBSA verifications, and dispute resolution matters
Design and implement customs compliance frameworks and internal controls
Communicate directly with clients and regulatory authorities
Collaborate with tax, transfer pricing, and cross-border teams across Canada
Contribute to practice development, knowledge management, and coaching of junior staff
This role involves both technical analysis and client-facing advisory responsibilities.
Your Experience and Qualifications
University or college degree/diploma in a Customs and International Trade discipline
Minimum 3–5 years of experience in customs advisory, international trade compliance, or regulatory dispute resolution
Demonstrated experience handling customs issue resolution and verifications
Experience at a professional services firm, CBSA, or in-house global trade function is a strong asset
Strong working knowledge of:
Tariff classification and valuation principles
FTA Rules of origin
Canadian surtaxes and trade remedy measures
Proven ability to draft technical memoranda and regulatory submissions
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong analytical capabilities and attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple client engagements with competing deadlines
