Overall Responsibility
The Architect is a leadership role specializing in design and technical aspects for a project’s resolution from initial Client initiation through Schematic and Design Development, Working Drawings, Tender, and Construction Phases through to a successful completion. The Architect will manage a wide range of architectural projects including private sector development (residential, commercial, industrial, hospitality) and public sector projects. The Architect must have strong communication and organizational skills in acting as the liaison between the project team, authorities having jurisdiction, clients and senior staff. The Architect deals with numerous projects at various stages in an on-going basis, and must keep each project on track and moving ahead. The Architect will be provided the appropriate in-house Staff resources to execute the Work such as: Site Planners, Draftspersons, Specification Writers, Interior Designers, and Administrative personnel.
The Architect is a part of the Firm’s Management Team and as such will attend each Monday Morning weekly Staff Resources Coordination Meetings and weekly Monday afternoon Architectural Design Coordination Meetings. Other Managements Responsibilities will include:
· Responsibilities for the Architect’s Projects’ Profitability:
· Preparation of Fee Proposals
· Execution of Client/Architect Agreements
· Management of Staff Resources on Projects.
· Building and Maintaining Project Production Timelines and Deliverables
· Liaising with Client on aspects of Projects Costs such as when extra fees or omissions occur.
· Conflict Resolution
· Client Retention
· Seeking out new Clients and Opportunities for the Firm
The Architect reports to the President (Principal Architect) and the General Manager.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Schematic Design
· Work with the Client to establish Terms of Reference, initiate Programmatic and Schematic Design.
· Work with Site Planners to determine all Project Site Plan related constraints i.e. Zoning, road widenings, grading, existing conditions, floodplains, OBC restrictions
· Research and review of local land development regulations and standards
· Development of conceptual architectural plans and diagrams via commencement of the Project Design Brief Template
· Review Schematic Designs with the Principal Architect & Client and Municipal Officials
· Attend and assist in meetings and presentations
· Responsible for the preparation of graphics for presentations, 3D renderings, sketches, etc..
Design Development
· Adhere to schedule for Site plan applications, consultant coordination etc.
· Maintain accurate records of all communications and processes
· Attend meetings, manages minor land use applications including project report writing
· Responsible for the preparation of Design Development Deliverables architectural and otherwise
· Attend meetings as required
· Manage the Project Team
· Liaise with the Client
· Report to Architect and General Manager at regularly scheduled meetings
Construction Documents
· Responsible for the preparation of Working Drawings and Specifications Deliverables architectural and otherwise
· Attend meetings as required
· Manage the Project Team
· Liaise with the Client
· Report to Architect and General Manager at regularly scheduled meetings
Construction Administration
· Responsible for the day-to-day construction of multiple Projects whether directly or via an ABA Project Manager or Coordinator on the file.

Financial Responsibilities
· Preparation of Fee proposals
· Monitor ABA progress against Fee Proposal
· Liaise with the Financial Administrator
· Assist in invoicing
· Review and manage project budgets
· Solicit Consultant Fee Proposals
· Review Consultant invoices and monitor progress
· Make determinations about claims for Extras
Skills and Experience
· License to practice Architecture in the Province of Ontario (OAA Designation)
· Minimum 10 years of related local work experience
· Good knowledge of Ontario Building Code, standard construction practices, fundamentals of site design
· Familiar with Site Plan Approval Processes for various Ontario Municipalities
· Perform computer-aided drafting and design tasks
· Computer skills and proficiency with software such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Word and Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Revit, SketchUp, MS Project
· Multi-tasker, able to handle many files at a time
· Excellent communication skills
· Patient; able to deal with pressure and stressful situations
· Good people skills, good teacher and willingness to impart knowledge
· Willing to take responsibility/accountability of projects
