Operations Shift Supervisor

The Sault Ste. Marie facility is a large-scale industrial manufacturing operation where teams work collaboratively to produce high-quality steel products through complex, highly automated production processes.
Position Overview:
The Operations Shift Supervisor provides frontline leadership to production teams during assigned shifts within a heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
This role is responsible for supervising plant operators and technicians, ensuring safe and efficient plant operations, and achieving production targets while maintaining quality and operational performance standards.
The supervisor works closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to address operational challenges and support continuous improvement initiatives across the facility.
Supervisors may be assigned to support operations in one of several key production areas within the plant.
Operations Areas Include:
Depending on operational needs, supervisors may oversee teams in one of the following departments:
- Heat Treatment
- Welded Line
Each area involves highly automated industrial processes and requires strong operational leadership to maintain safe and efficient production.
Key Responsibilities:
Production Leadership:
- Lead and supervise production crews during assigned shifts
- Ensure production targets, throughput, and quality standards are achieved
- Monitor plant operations and respond to operational issues in real time
- Coordinate shift handovers and maintain clear communication between teams
Safety & Compliance:
- Promote and enforce health, safety, and environmental policies
- Identify and address unsafe conditions
- Participate in incident investigations and implement corrective actions
- Ensure compliance with operational and regulatory requirements
Operational Performance:
Monitor operational KPIs including:
- production throughput
- equipment downtime
- product quality
- process interruptions
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and reliability
Maintenance Coordination:
- Work closely with maintenance teams to resolve equipment issues
- Support preventative maintenance planning and execution
- Minimize operational disruptions during maintenance activities
Team Leadership:
- Supervise and support plant operators and technicians
- Provide coaching and performance feedback
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and strong operational discipline
Qualifications:
Education:
- Engineering degree, technical diploma, or equivalent industrial experience
Experience:
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in heavy industrial or manufacturing environments
- Previous frontline supervisory or team leadership experience
- Experience working in shift-based manufacturing operations
Preferred Industry Experience:
Experience in one or more of the following industries is considered a strong asset:
- Steel manufacturing
- Mining
- Pulp & paper
- Oil & gas processing
- Heavy industrial manufacturing

Compensation:
- Competitive base salary

Relocation Support:
For candidates relocating to Sault Ste. Marie, the company offers a relocation package of approximately $15,000, along with hotel accommodation coverage for up to 15 days during the transition period.
Work Environment:
This role operates within a rotational shift environment, which includes 12-hour day and night shifts within a fast-paced industrial manufacturing facility.
Requirements
- Technical diploma or degree
- 10+ years of manufacturing experience with progressive leadership responsibilities.
- Minimum 3–5 years supervisory experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
- Experience working within a unionized environment.
- Strong understanding of Canadian manufacturing safety practices.
- Ability to work 12-hour rotational shifts (days and nights).
- Experience in steel processing, heat treatment, or heavy industrial manufacturing.
- Familiarity with production KPI tracking and continuous improvement practices.
- Exposure to maintenance coordination within a production setting.
- SAP or ERP system experience.
