We are looking for a Line cook / Bakery helper, preferably with experience in working in a commercial kitchen and bakery.
This is a full time-position. Salary will be based on experience and will include shared tips and staff discounts. You can expect an upbeat and supportive work environment. We are looking for someone who works well in a team, has a great work ethic, enjoys a fast-paced environment, appreciates healthy local and sustainably produced food, and enjoys taking on a wide range of tasks.
Duties will include the preparation of daily soups; preparation of the ingredients for wraps, sandwiches and to-go items; preparation of fresh salads using a range of local seasonal produce; and the occasional preparation of catering items or specialty items as required. As well, the Line Cook / Bakery helper will prepare and serve our limited-menu weekend brunch. We are open to the public from 10:00-4:00, Wednesday to Sunday. The position generally involves six or seven hour shifts from 8:00am-2:30 as the kitchen closes most days at 2:00pm. Occasional Friday or Saturday evening dinner events are also planned throughout the spring and summer months.
The successful applicant will be responsible for morning set-up and end of day clean-up and breakdown of the kitchen and indoor dining area, as well as the outdoor patio. The position is also responsible for maintaining an inventory of goods produced and items needed to keep the kitchen running efficiently.
This position will include training time with our Head Cook, with a focus on basic kitchen skills, safe food handling, use and upkeep of a commercial stove, oven, and food processors.
In-house instruction will be available on preparation of the fermented and pickled foods that we use regularly in our menu. Prepping, freezing, dehydrating and canning of fresh produce for future kitchen use will also be undertaken in season.
In the bakery, the successful applicant will learn to prep cookie, scone and muffin doughs, as well as flatbreads, bagels and focaccia doughs. The Head Baker will provide instruction on use of the commercial oven and mixer, along with other basic baking skills. The successful applicant will also learn how to package, weigh, and label all baked goods for front-of-house sales, and will assist in monitoring the ongoing bakery needs so that there are no shortfalls.
NS Food Safe certification is a requirement for this position and Chicory Blue will cover the cost of obtaining the certificate.
