Come be part of the Upstream Technical Department at Imperial which has more than 140 year history in Canada and a workforce of 5,500+ total employees. Our offices are located in Calgary, AB.

What role you will play in our team

The Oil Sands Mineral Processing / Facilities Engineer is responsible for providing technical expertise, maintenance and operational engineering support for surface facilities within oil sands operations.

This role focuses on optimizing the performance, reliability, and integrity of plant systems—which may include supporting extraction, froth treatment, utilities, tailings, and associated infrastructure.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Operations, Maintenance, Integrity, Projects, and other technical disciplines to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient facility performance.

What you will do

Key Responsibilities

Operations Support & Optimization

  • Provide day‑to‑day engineering support to plant operations for extraction, utilities, and processing facilities.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance production, reduce downtime, and improve energy efficiency.
  • Review process deviations, conduct troubleshooting, and apply root-cause analysis to address equipment and operational issues.

Facility Integrity & Reliability

  • Ensure facilities comply with regulatory, safety, and environmental requirements.
  • Support implementation of reliability programs, including inspection recommendations, corrosion monitoring, and equipment lifecycle planning.
  • Partner with Maintenance to develop corrective actions and long‑term improvement strategies.

Engineering Stewardship

  • Maintain and update engineering documentation, process design data, P&IDs, and drawings.
  • Provide technical review and approval for management-of-change (MOC) activities.
  • Perform engineering calculations and assessments to validate safe operating limits and equipment fitness-for-service.

Project Development & Execution Support

  • Identify and scope small-to-medium capital and sustainment projects to enhance facility performance or regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with project engineering teams on design requirements, constructability reviews, commissioning, and startup support.
  • Develop business cases, cost estimates, and technical justifications for project funding.

Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Champion safe work practices, process safety management, and hazard identification.
  • Ensure facilities adhere to company standards, Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) requirements, and applicable codes (e.g., ASME, API, CSA).
  • Participate in HAZOPs, risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
  • Proactive, safety-focused mindset.

About you

Skills and Qualifications

  • Education & Certifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum, or related Engineering discipline.
    • Eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA

    • Strong understanding of plant processing systems such as:
      • Extraction and froth treatment
      • Utilities (steam, water treatment, power generation)
      • Tailings transport and treatment systems
    • Experience with plant troubleshooting, MOC, and reliability programs (RCFA, FMEA) is an asset.

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

  • Technical Skills

    • Proficiency with engineering software/tools (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, PI ProcessBook, AutoCAD).
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Knowledge of applicable industry codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks.

  • Soft Skills

    • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder‑management skills.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced operations environment with competing priorities.
