ESL Teacher for Refugees - Ukrainian Speaking

About Haven: Haven is a registered Canadian charity. Using our technology platform, findhaven.org, we connect a network of 17,000 refugees and Canadians. We want to build the best way for refugees who need help to connect with Canadians who can help.

Our flagship program is the Haven Language Program. Refugees, refugee claimants, and newcomers fleeing conflict now in Canada get the language help they need. This includes:

• Language classes with professional teachers.
• Conversation practice with Canadian volunteers.
• Individualized homework tailored by teachers.

All work is done online. Through these three aspects of the program, we provide instruction, immersion, and individual practice – perfect for those learning.

Classes include both private and small-group sessions, with small-group sessions including a maximum of four students who are the same level. Instruction is focused on improving speaking and listening, centred on the CLB framework.

The program is offered using a flexible schedule, meaning we also offer classes on weekday evenings and weekends. The program is currently only available in English, but we are looking to expand to French as soon as our resources allow.

You will be joining a team of 25 incredible teachers, all dedicated to our mission of helping refugees start life in Canada. Together, our goal is to be at the forefront of improving the language learning process for newcomers fleeing conflict.

The role: We are looking for English teachers in Canada that also speak Ukrainian who are passionate about teaching language to newcomers fleeing conflict. You will be a critical part of their resettlement journey. Our ideal candidate has the following:

• At least 3 to 5 years of teaching English as a second language - either within Canada and/or internationally.
• Very strong English communication skills.
• A self-motivated, proactive, and entrepreneurial mindset, with a desire to contribute to curriculum development and share ideas for improving program delivery.
• Experience teaching adult students in an online setting is a strength.
• Fluency in Ukrainian is an asset for teaching lower-level, CLB 1-3 classes.

Schedule: We offer flexible times to our students to accommodate for their work schedules. As such, a flexible schedule is preferred, where a teacher may be available during the regular working day, weekday evenings, and weekends for classes. This also allows for a flexible work schedule depending on your availability.

We are looking for both part-time and full-time teachers. Part-time starts at 10 hours per week, which may be increased to 20 to 30 hours depending on performance.
