Position Overview

Reporting to the Director Health Services - Acute, the Acute Care Supervisor is actively engaged in providing leadership to staff to achieve the operational priorities of the service delivery organization (SDO) including but not limited to Financial Sustainability, Patient Flow, Patient Experience, Quality/Safety, Staff Engagement. The incumbent is accountable for providing regional professional nursing leadership and support to direct service employees within the Acute Care program.

The Acute Care Supervisor, while on duty, is responsible for safe and effective clinical health services delivery and facility operations for a site/local geographical area when the health services leadership team is not available. While on duty, they will also be the first call for acute care sites in the region in the absence of the site or unit manager. The Acute Care Supervisor involves the appropriate On-Call Manager(s) as needed.

The incumbent exercises the appropriate level of initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities, work methods to be employed and action to be taken on unusual matters. The position functions in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values; and the policies of Southern Health-Santé Sud.

Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years Acute Care nursing experience.
  • Leadership/supervisory experience in a clinical setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in change management and system improvements, including skills in workplace re-engineering within a Quality Improvement Plan.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Bachelor of Nursing Degree or Registered Nurse Diploma or College of Licensed Practical Nursing of Manitoba.
  • Health Services Management course or equivalent.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Current registration and a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba or College of Licensed Practical Nursing of Manitoba.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of all aspects of Regional Acute Care systems and programs, Patient flow and bed utilization.
  • Knowledge of all relevant legislation and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to function within the professional code of ethics, professional standards and legislative requirements of the profession.
  • Ability to use an analytical and inquiring approach to program development and problem-solving.
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a multi-facility and program system.
  • Ability to prioritize in a changing environment.
  • Given the cultural diversity of our region, the ability to respect and promote a culturally diverse population is required.
  • Proficiency of both official languages is essential for target and designated bilingual positions.
  • Demonstrated ability to respect confidentiality including paper, electronic formats and other mediums.
  • Good work and attendance record.
  • Requires a valid Class 5 driver’s license, an all-purpose insured vehicle and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.

Physical Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job.
  • No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions.
  • May work occasionally evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Will be required to travel to other regional facilities as the position duties may require.
