Job description

At Stantec, we know the work we do matters. From decarbonizing mines to modernizing electric grids and building the infrastructure that fuels communities, we’re powering the world. Our clients come to us with their biggest, most complex challenges because that’s where we thrive. And we’re looking for problem solvers, high achievers, and visionaries to help us.

Join us for a chance to grow professionally as one of the world’s top design firms while building our clean energy future.

Your Opportunity

To facilitate and support continued growth within our Western Canadian Energy and Resources business line, Stantec is seeking a Process Engineering Manager. Reporting to the Engineering Director, the Process Engineering Manager will lead a team of discipline engineers and specialists to execute multiple projects safely, efficiently, and effectively.

The Process Engineering Manager will provide overall technical direction for the Process department. As the Process Engineering Manager, you will organize and manage the daily activities of the process engineering and process safety discipline group and steward continuous improvement in quality and technical excellence. You will optimize work processes and collaboration, and ensure the financial viability of the discipline by stewarding the blend of technical resources to execute projects efficiently and effectively. This role will also support business development efforts and pursue new business opportunities where practical.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee, supervise and lead the administrative and technical management of the Process Engineering team to enhance efficiency and reduce project execution costs.

  • Provide leadership and direction to a team of process engineers in the proper execution of engineering deliverables for various projects, proposals, and studies per the energy industry guidelines, codes, and standards.

  • Provide direction and support for compliance with regulatory guidelines and requirements.

  • Maintain and promote a culture of accountability, ownership, and excellence in the successful execution of technical work. Align with company leadership, business goals and targets, and percolate them to the team.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing and potential clients at the initiation of new projects or when pursuing potential projects.

  • Strive for continuous improvement of new and existing process discipline work processes, standards, and templates, for successful project execution.

  • Recruit, retain, mentor, coach, and lead all levels of team members, including developing succession plans for key roles and identifying/addressing capability gaps within the process engineering discipline. Establish annual business and career development goals and objectives, and monitor progress for the process engineering team.

  • Assist in developing process engineering scope of work, work hours, and project design basis for proposals and projects with appropriate quality, within the stipulated budget and schedule.

  • Ensure providing leadership for process safety studies, including PHA (HAZIDs, HAZOPs, LOPA, etc.) per the industry practice and guidelines.

  • Estimate resource requirements and people-hours for projects and allocate an appropriate blend of resources to the projects based on process discipline workload/resource forecasting.

  • Review project/process engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, feasibility, and compliance with governing codes and client requirements.

  • Review projects for compliance with department standards and procedures with respect to deliverable checking, development of process simulations, calculations, studies, and reports, and retention of QA/QC documentation.

  • Ensure building and maintaining the network of process engineers across Stantec’s business lines and regions, to support collaboration within Energy and Resources – Oil and Gas, as well as other sectors.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Registered P. Eng designation with APEGA or any other Canadian provincial jurisdiction, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering. A Master’s Degree would be considered an asset.

  • A minimum of 15 years’ experience in Energy (Oil and Gas) related projects, with a minimum of 8 years’ experience as Process Manager or Project Engineering Manager, with a focus on process engineering, in an engineering and consulting environment.

  • Natural aptitude in problem solving using appropriate theoretical and practical engineering principles.

  • Demonstrated experience in the management of large professional teams, preferably in an integrated design environment.

  • Must have experience in all phases of design and engineering (full project life cycle) of production and processing facilities - from concept selection, front-end design, to the detailed design phase. Experience as Owner’s Engineer would be considered an advantage.

  • Ability to delegate responsibility amongst the team and empower the team to function proactively.

  • Strong understanding of process engineering design and operations experience in conventional oil & gas facilities, as well as processing of natural gas, along with natural gas liquids and LNG, heavy oil processing facilities (SAGD and oil sands), refinery facilities, fertilizer plants, and power generation is desired. Knowledge of renewable/sustainable energy – hydrogen (including natural gas blending), carbon capture and storage would complement Stantec’s energy transition strategies.

  • Additional design and operations experience is desired in utilities, offsite facilities, gas and liquid pipelines, and product terminals.

  • Must be familiar with process simulation, in particular, Aspen HYSYS, and/or Process Symmetry, PROMAX, etc. Dynamic simulation capability would be an asset. Knowledge of pipeline and facility piping hydraulics would be valuable.

  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills, working with internal stakeholders such as the project management team, other engineering disciplines and external stakeholders, particularly collaborating with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

The position will primarily work in an office setting. Stantec is proud to offer a hybrid work environment, and the opportunity to work from your home office may be considered, however, due to the leadership component of this role, a large in-office presence will be required. Periodic travel will be required to other Stantec office locations, the field, and/or client meetings.

This description is not a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that may be required of the employee, and other duties, responsibilities and activities may be assigned or may be changed at any time with or without notice.

Stantec is a place where the best and brightest come to build on each other’s talents, do exciting work, and make an impact on the world around us. Join us and redefine your personal best.

Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
