The teacher’s job is to assure that all students learn the essential skills at each grade level to prepare students for college and beyond. The teacher must have a genuine love of teaching students, engage in lifelong learning activities, demonstrate a sensitivity to diversity and maintain a relentlessly optimistic belief that there are ways to enable all of the academy’s students to succeed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide focused academic support to the student on a schedule determined by the IEP through phone conferencing and/or face‑to‑face support.
  • Provide focused support to the parent on accommodations and interventions to promote the attainment of IEP goals through phone conferencing, virtual real‑time interaction and/or face‑to‑face support.
  • Ability to successfully teach students with challenging behaviors.
  • Proficiency in developing Present Levels of Educational Performance statements, IEP goals and objectives, Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Proficiency in implementing IEPs and Behavior Intervention Plans. Collect data and work samples to support documentation of IEP goals.
  • Document all contact with parents, collaborations with general education teachers, and interventions with students.
  • Provide focused support to all supplemental programs being used by the special needs student to ensure participation and progress.
  • Communicate with parents and therapists to ensure that special education students are receiving the appropriate therapies.
  • Make modifications and accommodations to K‑12 lessons and assessments as specified by the IEP.
  • Develop the student’s IEP, meeting all annual review timelines and notification requirements.
  • Ensure the student’s IEP is focused on attainment of grade‑appropriate academic standards as defined by the state.
  • Ensure that all reevaluations are completed within specific timelines as defined by state agency.
  • Attend all required professional development.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure full inclusion and success of student in the general education classroom.
  • Collaborate with the general education teachers on all progress, semester and grade reports.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers regarding “at‑risk” students to support the development and implementation of interventions within the regular classroom.
  • Maintain all required reports as assigned by the Special Education Manager including student progress reports.
  • Ensure that assigned students participate in state achievement testing and receive monitored accommodations as defined by the IEP.
  • Participate in the school’s self‑evaluation programs.
  • Support the school administration in the enrollment of special education students.
  • Assignment at this Academy will require additional professional development time beyond what is required, including trainings that will occur during the summer, during the Academy year after school and possibly on weekends.
  • Staff also will be required to participate in the evaluation and update of curriculum.
  • Staff will be required to participate in after‑school activities, programs, classes that will cover the following areas: theatre, broadcasting, journalism and recording.
  • Staff will be required to wear professional dress and, as needed, uniform shirt.

Requirements

  • Relentless focus on student results.
  • Bachelor’s Degree and must hold a Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with full Special Education certification with SV (Autism Spectrum Disorder) endorsement or (AI); (CI); or (EI) Endorsement and the appropriate Grade Level Description.
  • Ability to successfully teach students with challenging behaviors.
  • Proficiency in developing Present Levels of Educational Performance statements, IEP goals and objectives, Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Proficiency in implementing IEPs and Behavior Intervention Plans. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with parents.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to individuals’ specific needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to use & integrate arts and technology in classroom and project instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to differences and changes in characteristics of students, programs, leadership, staff and community.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize varied teaching methodologies to accommodate students’ unique learning styles.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate tests and measurements of achievement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to positively contribute to an innovative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver curriculum to students in a way that ensures student success and innovates practices to integrate performing arts and technology in the curriculum.
  • Demonstrated effective use of informative assessments to maximize student learning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology, including using student employment system and performance management tools.
  • Demonstrated accountability for student achievement.
  • Demonstrated understanding of standards‑based, performing arts and technology curriculum related to their discipline.
  • Required criminal history background check.
