What We’re Looking For

  • A Master's degree in Psychology, Special Education, or other relevant health-related discipline or Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Behaviour Analysis
  • At least 2 years recent experience providing direct behavioural assessment/consulting older adult mental health clients.

Details

Reporting to the Manager, Clinical Operations, the Behavioural Consultant conducts comprehensive behavioural assessments and supports case managers in developing and implementing behavioural interventions for clients with cognitive impairment, behaviours associated with dementia and psychiatric disorders. Works in collaboration with the interprofessional team to support the development, implementation and review of admission safety plans, behaviour support plans and access and discharge planning. Provides supportive information to community care networks and participates in the evaluation of process and outcomes to ensure continuing quality of service.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct behavioural assessments, gather psychosocial history, conduct in vivo behavioural observations, and utilize ABC charting and/or other behavioural data gathering techniques. Analyze data and develop intervention plans. Provides training/coaching to family members and caregivers when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with interprofessional team to provide support and input in the development, documentation, implementation, modification, and review of admission safety plans and behaviour support plans.
  • Participate in psychiatric assessment, assess client progress, follow up on implementation and re-evaluation of behavioural strategies.
  • Perform case reviews and process evaluations; prepare reports of observations to ensure continuity of quality service, communication, and client documentation.
  • Attend and participate in client‑related meetings, assessments, case reviews, progress meetings, access, discharges, and internal/external case conferences.
  • Coordinate assessment, intervention, and follow‑up for a caseload of individuals with cognitive impairment, dementia and psychiatric disorders.
  • Assist in program development, including preparation, prioritizing, scheduling, and arranging resources.
  • Support family members and care providers with up‑to‑date clinical information; recommend community resources.
  • Maintain client files according to established standards, procedures, and protocols.
  • Participate on committees to promote optimal client support and represent rehabilitation goals.
  • Participate in approved research and special projects; collect data, summarize information, or provide verbal updates.
  • Maintain and update clinical knowledge; develop professional development plan with personnel.
  • Carry out responsibilities per health and safety requirements; report unsafe situations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience:

  • Master's Degree in Psychology, Special Education, or other relevant health‑related discipline, or Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Behaviour Analysis.
  • Two years recent experience in direct behavioural assessment/consulting older adult mental health clients.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License; personal vehicle required for regional travel.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive behavioural assessments, develop and evaluate treatment programs.
  • Knowledge of recovery principles, psych placement, Mental Health Act, community resources, trauma‑informed practice, culturally safe practice, gender‑affirming care.
  • Manage conflict, aggressive behavior, and use non‑violent crisis intervention.
  • Work independently and as part of interprofessional team; proactively manage conflicts.
  • Broad knowledge of therapy theory and clinical practice within client and family‑centred model of care.
  • Basic knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills; manage caseload and prioritize.
  • Effective communication verbally and in writing; interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with office equipment, computer systems, and software.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties.
