We provide a variety of supports and services to people who have an intellectual disability, including residential, employment resources, community engagement, supported independent living, respite, and day programs. Description of Position
The Summer Employment Program (SEP) is a Career Connection program tailored to working with students who have an intellectual disability and employers. The program provides opportunities for students (ages 16-25) who have an intellectual disability the opportunity secure paid employment for 8 weeks during the summer. The focus of the program is on supporting students to increase employment related skills, improve work ethic, increase self-esteem, be part of an inclusive team and be a contributing member of society. The program also supports employers to reduce their time and costs in meeting summer labour needs, improve public relations as an equal opportunity employer, provides individualized job coaching and at no cost, establishes a community partnership and pre-screens applicants and reduces turnover.
Description of Duties
Job Coaches are responsible for meeting with students to determine their goals and interests. Job Coaches will work with employers in Mississauga and surrounding areas to discuss summer job requirements. Job Coaches will provide on-the-job support for students to learn their responsibilities on the job, enhance their soft skills, develop connections in the work place and continually enhance their overall work readiness skills. Job Coaches will ensure that a positive relationship is maintained between the student and employer, enable students to earn real pay for real work, support successful job matches and provide orientation, individualized training and ongoing support to the student and employer.
Qualifications
- Student with minimum one (1) year of post-secondary education in a related area of study
- Valid Ontario's Driver's license and use of a reliable vehicle with car insurance (minimum of $1 million liability)
- Valid Standard First Aid/Level C CPR Certificate
- Experience supporting people who have an intellectual disability
- Aptitude to learn quickly and to work independently
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Strong presentation and interpersonal skills
- Positive attitude along with excellent teamwork skills
- Must be available to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings and weekends.
- Must be comfortable using public transit.
Equivalency
- Social Services Worker Diploma, Child and Youth Worker Diploma, or a university degree in a related discipline
- Have experience working or volunteering with people who have an intellectual disability
- Fluent in French
- Aptitude to learn quickly and independently
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Positive attitude along with excellent teamwork
