Role Responsibilities

As a Crew Supervisor, you play a critical role in managing and supervising seasonal Wildfire Crews during Pre‑Suppression and Suppression activities and on various projects. You are responsible for ensuring the safety of your crew members and acting as a mentor to help enhance their knowledge and skills. When dispatched to a wildfire, you may be required to fill the role of Incident Commander, who is responsible for managing all resources on a wildfire. On larger incidents, you may be required to perform the function of Strike Team or Task Force Leader or Division Supervisor, supervising numerous crews within a manageable span of control.

  • Obtain daily project or wildfire assignments and conduct a safety briefing to address anticipated working conditions and identify potential hazards to ensure worker safety.
  • Act as a mentor and trainer to enhance the Wildfire Crew's knowledge base, skills, and abilities.
  • Effectively communicate with the Supervisor, Forest Area Duty Officer, and Wildfire Crews to complete tasks and assignments safely and on time.
  • Complete all administrative duties accurately and within established deadlines.
  • Ensure all operations comply with Departmental Standard Operating Procedures & Business Rules and Occupational Health and Safety Acts & Regulations.
  • Provide support to other Wildfire Operations and Wildfire Prevention programs.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Plus, one (1) year related experience.
  • Ability to perform physical duties to act in the role of a Wildfire Crew Supervisor.
  • All candidates must be 18 years of age or older as of March 1, 2026, or prior to their start date. Position start dates range from March 1 to April 30, 2026.

Assets

  • Knowledge of the Wildfire Management program, policies, and standard operating procedures.
  • Forestry‑related courses or equivalent education.
  • Emergency response or public safety operations related experience.
  • Leadership in high‑risk or dynamic operational environments.
  • Experience managing operational documentation, logs, reports, and safety forms.
  • Ability to lead and supervise teams in high‑risk or dynamic operational environments.

Additional Requirements

  • A valid, unrestricted Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License, or an equivalent Canadian license.
  • A minimum 3‑year Driver's Abstract, showing a record of seven (7) demerits or less, obtained within 30 days of your commencement date and presented to management prior to commencement.
  • A current Defensive Driving certificate.
  • A valid Standard First Aid certificate with CPR certification.
  • Passing results of the Fireline Support Fitness Standard. Walk: 3.2 km (2 miles) with 11.4 kg (25 lb.) backpack in 30 minutes.

About Your Work Environment

  • This position may require you to work evenings and weekends to meet fire season operational needs.
  • Positions require availability for export (travel outside of home area) and open to shift work, including evenings and weekends.
  • There is no public transportation service to this site; individuals must have their own transportation for commuting to work.
  • Free accommodation and meals, and access to equipment supplied by the employer.
  • Successful candidates will be provided with training at the Hinton Training Centre (HTC).
  • Estimated term of employment is from 3 to 8 months during the wildfire season, anticipated between April 2026 to October 31, 2026, dependent on operational needs.
