Work environment
RCMP employs technical staff responsible for developing and maintaining a Land Mobile Radio network. The Radio Technology Program supports front line policing operations across British Columbia. Technologists will troubleshoot RF anomalies, network failures, and provide ad‑hoc solutions for complex operational needs. Responsibilities include:
- Police 2‑way radio communication maintenance, configuration, and life‑cycle management
- Mountain‑top radio repeater station maintenance, configuration, and life‑cycle management
- IT support and development for Radio Over IP networks
- Communications planning and support for police operations and high‑security events (e.g., Olympics, national leaders’ summit)
- Development of applications for GPS tracking, satellite communications, UAVs, and remote video streaming
Multiple physical environments ranging from office/lab environments to detachment visits and remote mountain tops with exposure to all weather conditions. Travel is typically via vehicle or helicopter and occasional overnight trips / deployments are expected. Core business hours are Monday through Friday 08:00–16:00. Willingness to work overtime, provide after‑hours support, and be on call are required.
Conditions of employment

- Willing and able to travel throughout service area (BC) including remote area, overnights, and travel via helicopter or fixed‑wing aircraft
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Willing and able to work extended hours or adjust schedule with little or no notice to meet operational requirements
- Willing and able to provide after‑hours support via operational availability (on call)
- Mobility to the extent of crawling and working in confined spaces to install equipment
- Willing and able to lift heavy or irregular items up to 90 lbs
- Willing and able to perform work duties in inclement and uncomfortable weather conditions
- Willing and able to provide technical support to front‑line policing operations in the field
Essential qualifications
- Education: Graduation from a two‑year post‑secondary program in computer science, information technology, electrical engineering, or a related specialty.
- Experience:
- Technical capacity with IT and electronics/communications infrastructure solutions
- Writing technical documentation for IT and electronics infrastructure (architecture/design diagrams, data‑flow diagrams, procedures, use cases, user requirements, detailed build documents)
- Working with IT and electronic test tools (e.g., Wireshark, multimeters, spectrum/RF analyzers, protocol analyzers, power meters, oscilloscopes, signal generators)
- Analyzing, designing, modifying, or troubleshooting electronic circuitry
- Experience obtained in a work, academic, or lab environment
- Knowledge:
- Fundamental theory and practical application of IT infrastructure
- Fundamental theory and practical application of electronics discipline
- Abilities:
- Effective written communication
- Effective oral communication
- Planning and organizing workload (prioritization, meeting deadlines)
- Use of troubleshooting approaches to solve technical problems
Language requirements
Successful candidates must be able to read, write, speak, and understand both English and French. Preference is given to those who are fluent in both official languages.
