BCU Financial is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Accountant to join our dynamic finance team. Reporting to the Treasury & Finance Manager, this role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining regulatory compliance, and providing timely insights to support senior leadership. The Senior Accountant will lead financial close processes, coordinate regulatory filings, and assist with internal and external audits, while proactively identifying risks and implementing effective controls.
As a senior member of the team, you will mentor junior staff, promote cross-training, and foster a collaborative work environment. In addition, you will support the CFO and management team by delivering reliable financial information, driving process improvements, and safeguarding the integrity of the credit union’s financial operations. This position requires strong technical expertise, a proactive mindset, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and reconcile monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with IFRS.
- Support the month-end and year-end close activities and assist with internal and external audit engagements.
- Generate and record asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information and external supporting documents.
- Compile bank and other balance sheet GL account reconciliations including aging of all outstanding items and ensuring all reconciliations are completed within specified timelines.
- Reconcile the daily balancing of financial data between the banking system and financial accounting system to ensure completeness of financial data in the financial accounting system. Investigate and remediate any differences.
- Review and analyze the daily exception report, correct GL mapping exceptions, and work cross-functionally with other business units to remediate discrepancies.
- Prepare monthly management reporting packages and accompanying schedules, worksheets and narratives. Assist in providing follow-up and documentation of significant variances.
- Maintain prepaid, accrual and fixed asset schedules including corresponding amortization schedules.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad hoc regulatory reporting and filings.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, eliminate unnecessary or redundant tasks and to improve governance and oversight.
- Develop and implement accounting procedures by documenting and analyzing current procedures and recommending changes.
- Actively participate in cross-training to ensure team resilience.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior accounting staff.
- Assist with ad hoc projects, issues, and urgent deliverables.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education & Occupational Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years in financial accounting or reporting, ideally within a financial institution.
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
- In-depth knowledge of IFRS and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel; experience with SQL is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with Fiserv DNA or Prologue systems an advantage.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Additional Considerations
- Exposure to treasury and risk management, audit coordination, and board reporting.
- Knowledge of credit union operations and FSRA guidelines.
