Feed Mill and Boiler Operator, Animal and Poultry Science (North Battleford)
Primary Purpose: To provide for the safe and efficient operation of the 975 kw boiler and provide operator support to the feed mill operation at the Canadian Feed Research Centre (CFRC) located in North Battleford, SK.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Manager, Canadian Feed Research Centre, the chief power engineer/Feed Mill Operator will maintain and operate the boiler and assist with feed manufacturing and warehousing duties. The CFRC can be a physically demanding environment and working with minimal supervision is necessary on a routine basis. The plant is an industrial environment and operators will run, maintain, and clean the plant and machines. Standard hours of work are 8:00 am until 4:30 pm but flexibility is necessary when the manufacture of trial diets runs into overtime, occasional weekend work is also required.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
- Performs preventive and reactive maintenance, repairs, monitoring and cleaning of equipment in the plant. Completes routine rounds and takes frequent readings and records relevant data for boiler operations. Troubleshoots alarms and problems as they occur. Ensure safety and stability of operations
- Processes and accurately measures grain and ingredients in rations for dairy, poultry, beef, sheep and other species as required for teaching and research purposes and in accordance with quality and safety standards and policies
- Apply safety protocols and policies
- Operate manual and computer-controlled mill equipment such as weigh scales, roller mills, hammer mills, pellet mills with conditioners, grain augers, extruder, vacuum coater, load out and other novel processing equipment as needed
- Operate equipment such as forklift trucks
- Assist with basic maintenance of mill equipment and maintains up to date planned maintenance records
- Quality control, verification of production conditions, compliance with CFIA requirements, maintaining HACCP standards and paperwork
- Assist in receiving of goods
- Assist with instruction of students and researchers in basic mill operation
- General facility and grounds maintenance
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Candidate must have a minimum of a 4thClass Power Engineer’s Certificate.
Experience: Two to five years’ experience as an assistant engineer in a high-pressure Steam Plant of medium capacity.
Skills: Proficiency with operating process machinery. Interpersonal skills to explain process and operational tasks to both students and site visitors. Competency in using e-mail, Word and Excel, meticulous record keeping and knowledge of quality control procedures are necessary. Ability to prioritize and sequence projects when multiple tasks are required.
