Occupational Therapist Neuromuscular Team

The Occupational Therapist role will be part of the interdisciplinary neuromuscular team. The neuromuscular team strives to optimize and enhance the quality of life for children/youth with neuromuscular conditions and their families. We fill a collaborative role to share knowledge and information provide assessments and deliver care. Our aim is to respectfully support and guide children/youth and families to reach their personalized life goals and values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with clients and families to formulate and implement individualized client-centered goals with focused targeted and measurable outcomes.
  • Provide client care in collaboration with the client/family to plan implement and evaluate care documenting the habilitative/rehabilitative process according to hospital policies.
  • Interface and problem solve with members of the interprofessional care team and community providers as appropriate to ensure an integrated approach to care.
  • Incorporate evaluative activities into professional practice to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective health care.
  • Demonstrate strong critical thinking/reasoning and utilize research to establish and support evidence-informed practice.
  • Provide direct service consultation and education to clients families and community providers with focus on maximizing the clients function in the areas of self-care productivity (school and play skills) and leisure (community or sports participation).
  • Address challenges identified in client occupational performance. Provide assessment and intervention directed at the person occupation and environmental factors influencing occupational performance such as activities of daily leaving; splinting devices; transfer and lift devices; wheelchairs and seating etc.
  • Organizes and co-ordinates assistive technology to meet the seating wheeled mobility and positioning needs of clients in collaboration with clients/families therapists and vendors
  • Practice according to organizational policies and standards of practice as set out by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario and the policies procedures and standards of care of Holland Bloorview.
  • Contribute to the hospitals academic mission through student supervision and / or academic teaching and / or contribution to research
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives such as quality boards supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices.
  • Document workload statistics according to the Ministry of Health
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Bachelors degree in Occupational Therapy required; Masters degree in Occupational Therapy preferred
  • Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
  • Membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and/or the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists is an asset.
  • Knowledge of and experience in occupational therapy assessment and treatment of children and youth with a variety of conditions
  • Current ADP Registered Authorizer Number for mobility devices strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience in occupational therapy assessment and treatment of children and youth with progressive neuromuscular disorders (e.g. DMDSMA) is an asset
  • Knowledge of and experience with occupational therapy assessment techniques therapeutic skills modalities and their applications
  • Knowledge and experience with a wide variety of lifts and transfers from wheelchairs beds bathtubs toilets etc. required
  • Experience with current outcome measures (i.e. Canadian Occupational Performance Measure Goal Attainment Scaling manual muscle testing etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities effectively and efficiently
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and in a solution focused manner with inpatient clients families and members of the interprofessional care team
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an inpatient interprofessional team is essential
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development
  • Experience with being a positive change agent and quality improvement initiatives is an asset
  • Status appointment in the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy at University of Toronto is an asset
