Position Purpose :

Reporting to the Dean Faculty of Law Civil Law Section the incumbent exercises leadership over all experiential learning programs including internships clinics co-op positions and mooting competitions. The incumbent improves the Sections visibility and outreach by updating promotional content raising funds and developing external partnerships notably within the legal profession and grant agencies. The incumbent will take part in recruiting students and professors in coordinating the awards committee and in developing strategic initiatives related to professional development.

In this role your responsibilities will include :

Experiential learning and professional skills development

Manages all activities related to legal skills development teaching in legal clinics and co-op positions and applied instruction including all activities related to mooting competitions and other student competitions in which the Civil Law Section participates. Ensures supervision whether legal educational or administrative as required of students participating in legal clinics or experiential learning programs including the pro bono program. Responsible for correcting reports and assigning final marks for these programs.

Serves as a subject matter expert in designing opportunities for experiential learning. Coordinates the creation of new experiential learning projects with the Universitys centralized experiential learning and career development services.

Initiates discussions with the larger community of law professors and legal professionals working in experiential learning programs and clinics in other law faculties in Ontario in Quebec across Canada and around the world to keep abreast of best practices and innovations in the field.

External relations

In collaboration with the dean and central resources designs and implements a strategy for developing relationships with alumni and raising funds based on an in-depth knowledge of the legal landscape its participants and its issues. Facilitates interactions and opportunities by targeting and meeting with potential donors. At the request of the dean negotiates contracts and agreements and prepares funding applications sent to external agencies such as the Barreau du Québec the Law Foundation and the Clinique de droit notarial.

Represents the Section on several university boards and committees and other agencies including the Barreau du Québec and the Chambre des notaires du Québec.

Other areas of responsibility

Responsible for coordinating the financial aid committee including planning and holding meetings supervising the candidate evaluation process and designing recommendations for the allocation of scholarships. Works closely with Financial Aid and Awards to ensure that relevant financial information is integrated eligibility criteria and institutional policies are met and communication with student recipients and internal and external stakeholders is transparent.

What you will bring :

Licentiate or bachelors degree in law (LLL / JD)

A minimum of seven (7) years experience as a legal professional with membership in good standing of a provincial or territorial bar association

Knowledge of regulations policies and collective agreements and experience in applying and interpreting them

Experience in project management

Experience in working in a university environment

Bilingualism French and English (spoken and written)

Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

Ability to create and maintain internal and external partnerships

Excellent skills in planning and in organizing workload coupled with a strong ability to manage priorities meet tight deadlines and closely monitor files

The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.

Prior to May 1 2022 the University required all students faculty staff and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as defined in Policy 129 Covid-19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
