The Opportunity

Position: Engineer/Analyst (Electrical Power) - High Current Lab

Employment Type: Permanent

Employment Level: Intermediate

Location: 800 Kipling Avenue, Toronto, ON

Department: Line Asset Management (LAM)

Reports to: Service Line Manager, HCL and HVL

Hours per week: 37.5

Starting Salary Range: $101,300- $120,000 Exact compensation may vary depending on the individual experience and qualifications of each candidate. Applicants with greater or less than the minimum qualifications for this posted opportunity may be considered for alternate opportunities.

Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

  • Provide technical and analytical expertise for multiple projects and ensure High Current Laboratory project work is completed on schedule and budget, to the required quality and safety standards.
  • Act as a resource by contributing to proposals and supporting technical project management related to Kinectrics’ High Current Laboratory (HCL).
  • Work independently and as a part of engineering and technical teams to assess the client’s testing needs.
  • Develop technical work instructions and procedures for high current testing including Safety Operating Procedures, Job Safety Analysis reviews, test plans and setup configurations.
  • Provide expertise on the plant components in the HCL (transformers, switchgear, breakers, relays, bus, insulators, etc.) and on the effective and safe operation of the High Current Laboratory facility.
  • Work with technical teams to provide guidance, instruction, and mentoring in areas of electrical engineering and technology required to setup and operate the HCL. Provide technical expertise in areas such as Power Equipment Standard testing.
  • Conduct test data analysis and prepare engineering reports that summarize test processes, test results, and test outcomes for clients.
  • Deliver sales and technical presentations. Build relationships with current and potential new customers.
  • Support the maintenance and upgrades to the key test equipment. Introduce and implement innovations to the plant equipment and data acquisition and monitor computer systems.
  • Continuously innovate to strengthen the services, products, technology and skills within the HCL Service Line offering.
  • Perform other duties as required.

What You Need to Succeed

Education and Technical Knowledge:

  • A four-year university education in Electrical Engineering is a minimum requirement (M.Sc. or Masters of Electrical Engineering in a relevant field could be an asset).
  • Requires advanced knowledge of electrical theory; especially fundamental electrical, science and physics that can be practically applied to laboratory testing issues, power system apparatus standard testing.
  • Profound understanding of electrical circuits, power electronics and 3-phase rectifiers.
  • Knowledge of Transmission and Distribution power systems is an asset.
  • Skill with data acquisition, analysis and modeling software programs, power system analysis software would be an asset.
  • Basic programming knowledge in LabView, Phyton or similar programming language.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in the role of “consultant engineer” with a demonstrated ability to secure work is needed.
  • Member of Professional Engineers of Ontario could be an asset.

Technical Experience:

  • It is expected that a minimum of 3 years working experience with electrical testing, particularly with High Current or High Power, would be required to gain the expertise required for this position.
  • Recognition by the industry as High Power or High Current technical expert should have been achieved. Recognition is demonstrated by leadership in industry committees, publications etc.
  • Experience with writing technical reports, writing Standards, writing Industry peer- reviewed Papers and Articles, producing failure investigations, procedures and specifications, developing training material and conducting Courses should be evident.
  • Experience with embedded controller systems and data acquisition systems.
  • Flexibility to work in a wide array of technical topics related to transmission and distribution engineering.

Project Management, Customer Focus and Business Skills:

  • Considerable knowledge and experience in project management in order to effectively and rapidly coordinate/mentor/lead other staff in order to integrate multidisciplinary activities and/or key projects.
  • Must have up-to-date knowledge and experience in project management methodologies.
  • Experience working in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 is an asset.
  • Excellent problem-solving, written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are needed.
  • Ability to manage time and work on multiple projects in parallel with the capability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, clearing bottlenecks and within project constraints (time, cost, quality). Flexibility to meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience training staff in various work methods and conducting detailed safety reviews.
  • Strong customer focus and broad experience for successfully developing new service offerings. Initiative to propose and implement new business ideas in the area of HCL testing.
  • Requires knowledge of the power delivery market focusing on manufacturers and electric utilities.
  • Good technical presentation skills and articulating technical terms to highly technical and non-technical audiences.

This role requires the successful candidate to complete the security clearance process. The security clearance process is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and may take up to 12 months to complete.
