Whether you’re in the classroom, on the playing fields, in the office or in the cafeteria, we know it’s the dedicated staff who bring our mission to life – you are what creates a child’s school experience, and contribute to students reaching their full potential.We proudly serve over 40,000 students across almost 100 elementary and secondary schools in Niagara, located between Lake Erie in the South and Lake Ontario to the North.POSITION: Supply InterpreterLOCATION: DSBN Elementary & Secondary Schools in the Niagara RegionRATE OF PAY: $30.36 per hour (including 4%vacation pay)SCHEDULE: On-call working up to 35 hours per weekPosition Summary:The Supply Interpreter provides American Sign Language (ASL) and/or other sign language interpretation services to facilitate effective communication between Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, parents, and educational staff within the school environment. The Supply Interpreter also supports educational teams by contributing insights on communication strategies and participating in Individual Education Plan (IEP) development and review. Flexibility and professionalism are key, as the interpreter may be called upon to assist in various settings and situations as needs arise.Additionally, you will have the opportunity to contribute to an OMERS Pension paving the way for long-term financial security. Benefit from the opportunity to enhance your skills and knowledge through professional development opportunities offered at the DSBN.The functions of this position could include (but are not limited to): Interpreting in the classroom and assemblies for students; Interpreting for Deaf and Hard of Hearing parents when those parents need to communicate with educational or special services staff; Preparation for classroom interpreting (i.e. familiarization with vocabulary and concepts); Participating in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress on the Individual Educational Plan; Providing insight on the success of communication strategies; Providing interpreting for extra-curricular activities; Providing interpreting for other needs that may arise. Qualification: Graduated or currently enrolled in a recognized interpreter training program (ITP); Active membership in the provincial and national interpreting associations; Fluency in English and American Sign Language (ASL); Knowledge of the AVLIC Code of Ethics; Knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture.
