The Road Safety Division at the Department of Public Works is responsible for the administration of drivers and vehicles in the province. We are responsible for the policies, legislation, and regulations that guide Road Safety in our province. We operate in a proactive regulatory environment.

About Our Opportunity

The Alcohol Ignition Interlock Representative is responsible for administering and facilitating Nova Scotia’s Interlock program. This work is conducted within a regulatory environment with decisions and actions being governed by the provincial Motor Vehicle Act and associated regulations.

We operate in a fast-paced environment where the decisions you make have a direct impact on clients. Confidentiality is of utmost importance too, given the sensitive information you will encounter on a regular basis.

Primary Accountabilities

As the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Representative, you are responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program and are relied upon to have broad knowledge of the program and associated legislation and regulations. You will respond to a high volume of telephone inquiries and require your strong multi-tasking skills to manage multiple interruptions and help keep our goals on track.

You have regular contact with interlock device service providers, Driving While Impaired service providers, program participants, internal and external stakeholders, department staff and Service NS providing information and guidance on legislation and program policies and procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

You have at least five (5) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.


Proven ability to analyse complex, ambiguous or conflicting information. Excellent communication, multitasking, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential to your success. You also utilize a high degree of tact and diplomacy and work effectively under pressure. You have an awareness of oneself and use this insight to effectively manage your actions in the best interest of the organization.

You are outcome focused, promote best practices, evaluate processes and make adjustments to improve both efficiency and effectiveness. You adapt quickly to change and will modify your approach to achieve objectives and are a self-motivated individual who works both independently with minimal supervision and participates fully as an effective team player. You have proven experience working in an environment where paying attention to detail and accuracy is of the utmost importance. You possess problem solving abilities and can analyze and present information in a clear, concise manner.

It is essential that you have a high level of competence and comfort in using computers, software packages (such as Microsoft Office Suite), as well as experience using databases. Proficiency and accuracy in keyboarding and data entry is required, along with your ability to use spreadsheets. You consistently maintain confidentiality in all you do.


Though not required, the following would be considered an asset:

  • Knowledge of the Registry of Motor Vehicle (RMV) system, working knowledge of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, Criminal Code of Canada, and the Justice Enterprise Information Network (JEIN).


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience will be considered. Related equivalencies include, but are not limited to:

  • A completed related bachelor’s degree and one (1) year of experience
  • A completed related diploma and three (3) years of experience

Working Conditions

  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
  • May be required to work overtime on occasion.
  • The working conditions require regular phone communication, including interactions with clients who may be difficult or distressed.
  • Typically located in a comfortable office environment.
  • Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
  • Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
  • May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.

Additional Information

This is a Term employment opportunity with an anticipated end date of December 8, 2027. The appointment status (Casual, Temporary or Term) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade: CL 22

Salary Range: $2,123.03 - $2,348.18 Bi-Weekly
