Job Summary
The Industrial Hygienist is responsible for providing strategic and technical guidance on key programs related to occupational health and hygiene. The role is accountable for coordinating program implementation, collecting stakeholder feedback, supporting training with field personnel and supervisors, as well as conducting and handling occupational hygiene exposure assessments. The incumbent conducts site visits, inspections, and monitors worker exposure (, silica, noise, welding fumes, lead, indoor air quality, ergonomics, etc.). Moreover, the Industrial Hygienist coordinates sampling initiatives, supports program updates and departments with industrial hygiene components.
Main Responsibilities
Ergonomics and Risk Management
- Advise on and support the implementation of an ergonomics program at CN
- Support stakeholders on strategies that help drive effective ergonomics and risk reduction
- Work with partnership, leadership, and workers to facilitate Ergonomics Program requirements
- Develop a risk management system and integrate ergonomic design guidelines into the engineering process
- Support various departments for ergonomic risks, investigations, claim closures, and legal support
- Collaborate with other CN departments (, Operations, Dangerous Goods, Medical) for employee outreach, program initiatives, and new project developments
Industrial Health and Hygiene Programs
Develop, maintain and continuously improve on industrial hygiene programs and processesConduct assessments, identify trends, and recommend initiatives to reduce exposures and illnessesDevelop and update content for training initiatives (, ergonomics, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, biological hazards)Participate in exposure investigation processes and support the identification and implementation of follow-up action plansCompliance, Support, and Collaboration
Participate in collaborative Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) internal auditsAct as a technical resource and support to regional and local facilities, including local regulatory agencies (, Labour Canada)Respond to, direct and advise on actions to address employee exposure situations or concernsWorking Conditions
The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday with occasional work on evenings and weekends. The role requires regular travel (50%) within Canada for field work. On-call emergency response travel may be required on a limited basis without prior warning. The role requires participation in on-call duties on a rotating basis with other department industrial hygienists. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.
