Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for one (1) Permanent Full -Time position of Trainer Bus Maintenance with the department of Transit Fleet, Halifax Transit.

Under the general direction of the Superintendent, Fleet, the Trainer Bus Maintenance, manages the training program for new Bus Maintenance employees, and continuous training for more than 180 maintenance staff, including hostlers, hostlers repair, Truck and Transport mechanics, Autobody & Collisions Technician mechanics and automotive mechanics, as well as other maintenance staff in the Bus Maintenance division. The trainer also validates the content of the different levels of Preventive Maintenance Program, and creates and manages an associated Quality Assurance program. In addition, the Trainer assumes responsibility of managing for the overall departmental training plans and plays an active role on the Transit leadership team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Designs, develops, implements and evaluates, in consultation with Business Analysts, Supervisors and Superintendents, the delivery of specialized training and continuous training programs to meet the changing needs of Halifax Transit Bus Maintenance.
- Develops training and development programs and associated training materials for Apprentice Mechanics, Licensed Mechanics, Hostler Repairpersons and Hostlers, as well as other maintenance staff in the Bus Maintenance division.
- Conducts classroom and on floor training for Bus Maintenance employees.
- Develops testing criteria for maintenance staff to evaluate skill sets.
- Ensures training and processes meet provincial and Federal guidelines as per the Motor Carrier Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS).
- Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the Bus Maintenance Training program through the creations and management of an associated Quality Assurance program (Q&A) using audits with apprentices & mechanics to ensure the field performance of the mechanics meets the provincial standards.
- The trainer validates the content of the different levels of Preventive Maintenance Program, PM A, PM B, PM C and PM D and creates and manages an associated Quality Assurance program.
- Assists with the implementation of all components of the bus maintenance recruitment program, including screening, testing, interviewing and selection.
- Develops and implements appropriate programs to monitor and evaluate progress of new employees during training; provides and follows up on recommendations for improvement.
- Develop programs to monitor and evaluate probationary employees in safe work practices and quality of work.
- Makes performance management recommendations for personnel.
- Conducts coaching sessions with Bus Maintenance staff, as required.
- Trains and audits performance of contract personnel, as required.
- Ensure employee training records and the training library are maintained.
- Develop policies and procedures as they apply to new equipment and / or activities so that training and safety requirements are met.
- Liaises with Quality / Business Analysts and Bus Maintenance Supervisory groups to ensure the delivery of fully qualified employees that can meet service requirements.
- Responsible for the change of management associated with new training as well as updates to existing processes and standards.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Education and Experience :
Successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.National Red Seal Certificate Truck and Transport Mechanic (Province of Nova Scotia Chapter NSAA).Certificate or diploma in adult education; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.Five (5) years of experience in the bus maintenance or heavy equipment industry.Valid Driver’s License with a good driving record.Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities :
Excellent communication skills.Knowledge of Transit buses.Knowledge of reading technical prints and documentation.Experience using Fleet Focus or other maintenance management system.Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook including Word and Excel.Security Clearance Requirements : Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
