Role and Practice Details
The Cardiac Anesthesia Division is actively recruiting to support a growing program. The Division consists of 8 members who provide seamless coverage with pre-operative consultation, anesthesia for cardiac surgery and post-operative care in the Cardiac Surgery ICU. The Cardiac Surgery ICU is a 6-bed unit with capacity to expand to 8 beds. Our cardiac surgery volume is 600 cases per year with plans to increase due to growing patient demand. The scope covers the entire spectrum of cardiac surgery, excluding minimally invasive procedures and transplant. We also provide short-term mechanical support (V-A ECMO, V-V ECMO, VAD). The division supports the TAVI program with an annual volume of 150 cases. We also provide consultation and TEE support to general anesthesia colleagues for patients undergoing complex non-cardiac surgery.
When fully staffed, we aim for a 50 / 50 split between cardiac anesthesia and general anesthesia. In addition to appointment to the Dept. of Anesthesia, members of the Cardiac Anesthesia Division receive an adjunct appointment to the Dept. of Cardiac Sciences.
Facilities and Location
Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health and serves as the region’s main referral centre with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 ED visits yearly. KGH houses the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC), BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland. IHSC is the principal surgical site and features 12 specialized ORs plus 2 ORs dedicated to Cardiac Surgery. The Centennial Building includes modern inpatient and surgical facilities, a rooftop helipad, and a teaching campus for UBC Southern Medical Program.
