Intermediate Electrical Engineer (Buildings)
Our client, a well-established consulting engineering firm, is seeking an Intermediate Electrical Engineer (Buildings) to join their team in Ottawa. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer looking to take on greater technical responsibility, contribute to complex building projects, and mentor junior staff within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
Role Overview
The Intermediate Electrical Engineer independently delivers electrical system design and supports project execution across a variety of building types. The role requires a strong technical foundation, the ability to manage design tasks with minimal supervision, and experience coordinating with internal teams and external stakeholders.
This position plays a key role in project delivery, technical quality, and the ongoing development of junior engineering staff.
Key Responsibilities
Lead electrical system design for assigned projects or specific project components
Perform detailed electrical load calculations, system analysis, and equipment selection
Develop and review electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, specifications, and technical reports
Coordinate electrical design with mechanical, architectural, and structural disciplines
Support project planning, scheduling, and technical execution alongside project managers
Review shop drawings, RFIs, and contractor submissions and provide technical responses
Participate in site visits, inspections, and construction administration activities
Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements
Support sustainable and energy-efficient design strategies, including lighting controls and power optimization
Mentor EITs and junior engineers and support their technical development
Contribute to internal quality assurance and design review processes
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility within a defined timeframe
Typically 4–8 years of experience in building services or consulting engineering
Strong proficiency with Revit and BIM-based coordination workflows
Solid understanding of power distribution, lighting, emergency systems, and low-voltage systems
Knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and best practices
Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Preferred / Asset Qualifications
Experience leading electrical design on commercial or institutional projects
Exposure to lighting controls, emergency power systems, or building automation interfaces
Experience mentoring junior staff or coordinating small project teams
Compensation Transparency
The expected compensation range for this role is $80 000 – $110 000 annually, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.
