The Opportunity :

Our team in Ontario currently has an opportunity for a Senior Environmental Planner with specific expertise in Permitting, Licenses, Approvals and Agreements as well as construction environmental management for transit-oriented projects.

As Canada's leading environmental consulting firm, our team has expertise in environmental and socio-economic impact assessments, planning, permitting, construction monitoring, and stakeholder and Indigenous engagement.

We work on world-class projects, collaborating not only with our 4000 strong Environment colleagues in Canada but with our broader Environmental team of 14,000 professionals globally.

Our team provides environmental services, primarily in the areas of environmental and socio-economic impact assessments (e.g., EAs / EIAs / ESIAs), planning, licensing, and stakeholder and Indigenous engagement.

You will rely on your demonstrated experience in tracking and obtaining environmental permits and approvals as well as working with constructors to implement projects in a manner that complies with the conditions set forth throughout the development stages of projects in Ontario, Canada. You will be a key member of a supportive team and serve a variety of clients and projects. You will delegate tasks and provide mentorship and training to junior / intermediate personnel.

A day in the life :

  • You will maintain environmental permits and approvals tracking logs for complex multi-disciplinary projects in the transportation sector.
  • You will guide the preparation of environmental permit and approval applications.
  • You will work with designers and constructors as part of integrated design-build and public-private-partnership arrangements to help deliver projects in compliance with environmental rules, regulations and project-specific commitments.
  • You will offer technical leadership to the team, providing strategic advice and oversight, and using strong project management skills to deliver high-quality products and services to our clients.
  • You will consult with regulators and clients, and oversee innovative programs that engage Indigenous communities and project stakeholders.
  • You will direct the environmental planning for multi-disciplinary transportation, energy and resource projects, including environmental impact assessments and related studies.
  • You will contribute to the growth of the team by developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key clients, identifying new project opportunities, and supporting proposals for the team.
  • You will mentor junior and intermediate staff, identifying career goals and development opportunities for them, and for yourself.
  • You will ensure health and safety policies are followed and be a role model for WSP's Life Saving and corporate values.
  • You will primarily be home / office-based but may need to travel for short-duration trips and events.
  • What you'll bring to WSP ...

  • Bachelor or Master's degree in environmental studies, environmental science, environmental engineering, or a related discipline
  • Around 8 years of experience in coordination of environmental permits and approvals, including preparation of applications, with a focus on transportation-related projects.
  • Experience working with consultants and contractors during construction phase works to deliver projects in compliance with environmental commitments and permit / approval conditions.
  • Existing relationships with the municipal and provincial regulatory agencies
  • Experience managing complex projects and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience with building client relationships
