Electrical Engineer

MatchBox Consulting Group is searching for an experienced Senior / Principal Electrical Engineer to support utility engineering projects on a flexible, casual part-time basis.

This opportunity offers significant flexibility and is particularly well suited to a senior professional who wants to remain active in the industry without committing to a traditional full-time position. It could be an excellent fit for someone interested in collaborating on projects in a casual or freelance capacity as an Independent Contractor, contributing their technical expertise, industry knowledge, and mentorship as needed.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior technical leadership and engineering support for electrical distribution and/or substation projects.
• Lead, review, and provide technical direction on engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and construction packages.
• Act as Professional of Record (PoR) / Engineer of Record (EoR) on assigned projects when required.
• Provide technical oversight to ensure engineering work meets applicable utility standards, codes, regulatory requirements, and professional practice requirements.
• Support the planning and design of overhead and underground distribution systems and/or electrical substations, depending on area of expertise.
• For distribution projects, provide expertise related to 25 kV and below systems, including overhead and underground design, equipment selection, utility standards, and constructability.
• For substation projects, provide expertise across 4 kV–500 kV facilities, including station layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding, circuit breakers, bus configurations, and physical design.
• Review designs prepared by engineers, EITs, and technologists and provide practical technical feedback and recommendations.
• Mentor and coach junior and intermediate engineering professionals, helping transfer technical knowledge and industry experience to the team.
• Support multidisciplinary coordination across electrical, civil, structural, protection and control, telecommunications, and construction teams.
• Provide senior engineering input throughout planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
• Support technical problem-solving, constructability reviews, design changes, and resolution of engineering issues throughout project delivery.
• Assist with the development and improvement of engineering standards, design practices, quality processes, and technical documentation.
• Collaborate with project managers, clients, utilities, contractors, and other stakeholders to support successful project delivery.
• Participate in technical discussions and design reviews with utility clients, including BC Hydro, where applicable.
• Provide additional senior technical or advisory support based on project needs and the individual’s availability.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
• P.Eng. with EGBC or eligible for registration in British Columbia.
• 15+ years of electrical utility engineering experience preferred.
• Strong experience in Distribution and/or Substation Engineering.
• Distribution experience may include 25 kV and below overhead and underground systems, SPIDAcalc, and PLS-CADD.
• Substation experience may include 4 kV–500 kV substations, layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding, circuit breakers, and station physical design.
• Experience working with a major Canadian utility or engineering consulting organization.
• BC Hydro project experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong technical leadership, communication, coaching, and mentorship capabilities.
