Job Summary
Under the direction of the Registered Nurse/Registered Practical Nurse, or other regulated health care professional, the Personal Support Worker (PSW) performs assigned functions as unregulated care providers, that support the health care team in assisting residents in activities of daily living, and supports the effective operations of resident care areas. The PSW shall provide resident care consistent with the unit specific duties and statement of limitations of the PSW classification and in accordance with all SJHCG policies and procedures.
Key Accountabilities
· Performs all duties in accordance with the Mission Statement and policies and procedures of St. Joseph’s Health Centre as adopted from the Ministry of Long-Term Care guidelines.
· The Helping Role

· The Provision of Resident Care
o assisting with personal hygiene (bathing, dressing, hair care, mouth care, nail care, and shaving)
o assisting with nutrition (providing fluids and nourishments as required, meal set up, assistance with feeding, and reporting of intake)
o assisting with urinary and bowel elimination (toileting, utilizing continence products, emptying of urinary and colostomy drainage bags, and reporting of output)
o promoting comfort by assisting with positioning, mobility, and ambulation as per care plan (positioning and turning of residents; using mechanical lifts appropriately; and reporting of any changes)
o promoting skin integrity (providing good skin care through washing, positioning, and turning of residents; ensuring that environment is safe of obstacles to prevent injuries; and reporting any changes in skin integrity). Immediately correcting if possible and reporting any situations that can or will effect the health and safety of the resident.
o assisting with passive and active range of motion exercises when appropriate
o facilitating appropriate rest and socialization

o improving the quality of life of residents through the ‘enhanced living model’ of practice

o contributing to and utilizing the established plan of care for the residents

o recording documentation in an accurate and timely manner according to policies and procedures
Qualifications & Experience
· Personal Support Worker certificate or diploma that meets program requirements set by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities for an Ontario postsecondary institution or district school board
· Experience in long term care preferred
· Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills
· Current CPR certification preferred.
· Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize required.
· Ability to function as a team member in a collaborative environment required.
· Ability to accept direction and work independently required.
· Knowledge of general persuasive approach preferred.
