About Us

The Office of Addictions and Mental Health (OAMH) provides provincial leadership, strategic direction, and policy oversight for mental health and addictions services in Nova Scotia, with a clear mandate to advance timely, equitable, and universal access to care.

OAMH establishes system priorities, develops policy and strategy, and oversees the effective use of public investments to ensure accessible, high quality, and evidence informed services across the province. Central to its mandate is the planning, funding, and performance oversight of a comprehensive continuum of mental health and addictions services, with a focus on ensuring that all Nova Scotians can access the care they need, when and where they need it.

Working in close partnership with Nova Scotia Health, IWK Health, and community-based organizations, OAMH supports the delivery of coordinated, person-centered services spanning prevention, early intervention, treatment, and recovery. The Office is responsible for advancing system integration, monitoring performance, and driving continuous improvement to strengthen access, quality, and outcomes.

Through collaboration with partners across government and sectors, OAMH addresses the broader social determinants of health and advances a coordinated, system wide approach to achieving universal access and improving mental health and addictions outcomes for Nova Scotians.

About Our Opportunity

The Project Coordinator Intern is a new opportunity within OAMH that provides critical operational and project support in support of the Office’s mandate, including its legislated responsibilities under the Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act (IPTA).

The role offers hands-on experience in core public service functions, including policy research and analysis, preparation of briefing materials, coordination of governance processes, and working within a legislated and accountable decision-making environment.

As the Project Coordinator Intern, you will report to a Senior Strategist in OAMH.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Coordinate IPTA Review Board administrative activities and hearings while maintaining secure and accurate case records within legislated timelines.
  • Support data collection, reporting, and policy and operational improvements related to IPTA legislative requirements.
  • Provide quality improvement support to records and information management processes, including developing and maintaining databases, improving tracking systems, and ensuring consistency, accuracy, and accountability in documentation and reporting for OAMH.
  • Provide analytical support for the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, programs, and initiatives across the Office.
  • Contribute to effective team functioning by supporting a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative workplace and maintaining strong internal communication.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate, you have graduated within the past three years from a university, community college, or a recognized trade school.

Preferred education includes:

  • Data or information management, business administration, health sciences, or public administration

You have well-developed written and verbal communication skills and are able to prepare clear, concise, and accurate materials for a range of audiences. This role also requires strong organizational skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and respectful workplace practices.

You also have demonstrated experience in:

  • Sound judgment and attention to detail, especially with confidential information.
  • Records and information management; including the development and management of databases.
  • Research and policy analysis, including collecting key information through activities such as jurisdictional scans and literature reviews, and synthesizing findings to inform decision-making.
  • Working collaboratively in team environments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, is required.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.
