Nurse Practitioner - Primary Care - Mental Health and Substance Use

Job Summary

Bring your clinical expertise and passion for providing quality, compassionate care to a challenging and rewarding role as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) providing primary care to patients with Mental Health and Substance Use disorders. Supporting the Surrey Mental Health Centre Gateway clinic in Surrey, B.C., the role offers an opportunity to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and construct comprehensive treatment plans for adults living with moderate to severe mental health conditions and complex medical needs.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and treat patients for undifferentiated diseases, disorders, and conditions within NP scope of practice; order medications and provide first‑line emergency care.
  • Monitor ongoing care, order appropriate diagnostic investigations, and interpret results to adjust treatment plans.
  • Communicate health findings, diagnoses, and treatment priorities to patients and families; support and counsel patients in their care journey.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other health professionals to assess patients, develop treatment plans, and manage admissions and discharges as per organizational policies.
  • Prescribe medications within statutory limits and employer policies.
  • Supervise and educate nursing and health‑care personnel; evaluate staff performance and provide mentorship.
  • Contribute to research improving patient outcomes and advancing nursing, health‑policy development, and population health.
  • Implement screening and health promotion activities for populations at risk.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary staff and nursing education through case presentations, mentoring, and community engagement.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures related to nursing and health‑system practices.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Current practicing registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and recent relevant clinical nursing experience.
