Job description

Discover TRIUMF, Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.

Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre. We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied. We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences. We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.

TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.

Are you an early-career Mechanical Engineer ready to learn and grow?

You might be a great fit if you bring some of the following:
  • A solid mechanical engineering foundation: you are interested in contributing to the design, analysis, and delivery of mechanical services systems such as HVAC, ventilation, cooling water, compressed air, and building controls

  • A hands-on, curious mindset: you are excited to support installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting

  • A collaborative approach: you enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team and are comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and learning from others

  • An interest in complex technical environments: you are motivated by working within established engineering practices, safety requirements, and regulated settings

  • A strong desire to develop your career: you are eager to build technical skills, take on increasing responsibility over time, and grow as an engineer with mentorship and guidance

What’s in it for you?
  • Hands-on experience on world-class science and engineering projects, including the ARIEL project supporting Canada’s national research programs

  • Mentorship and learning opportunities alongside experienced engineers, scientists, and technicians in a supportive, team-based environment

  • A meaningful early-career role where your contributions directly support safe, reliable research infrastructure

  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits to support your overall well-being

  • A healthy work–life balance, starting with three weeks of vacation, increasing to four weeks after two years

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Mechanical Services Engineer provides engineering support for the design, installation, commissioning, and operation of mechanical services systems, including HVAC, ventilation, cooling water, compressed air, and building control systems. The position focuses primarily on supporting the ARIEL project and, when required, contributes to site-wide mechanical services under the guidance of senior engineers. The role involves translating defined requirements into sound engineering solutions and supporting portions of larger, more complex projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide mechanical engineering support for projects of small to moderate scope under established engineering practices, codes, standards, and applicable legislation.

  • Assist with conceptual and detailed design activities, including preparation of calculations, drawings, and specifications under guidance from senior engineers.

  • Support procurement, fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning of mechanical systems.

  • Translate user needs and defined requirements into preliminary engineering solutions and design inputs.

  • Assist with coordination of installation activities and verify work complies with approved designs, specifications, and TRIUMF procedures.

  • Support commissioning activities, including execution and documentation of commissioning plans.

  • Maintain accurate engineering records and documentation for assigned work.

  • Assist with troubleshooting system issues and support safe restoration of systems under supervision.

  • Follow established design change management processes.

  • Participate in risk identification activities and escalate issues beyond scope to senior engineers.

  • Review technical documents such as drawings, specifications, and calculations for completeness and accuracy.

  • Participate in project and team meetings and contribute to progress updates and documentation.

  • Work collaboratively with engineers, designers, technicians, contractors, and vendors.

  • Conduct work in alignment with Group and Project objectives and established professional practices.

  • Take the initiative. Make suggestions to improve health and safety

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities. The incumbent may provide informal technical assistance to students or junior staff as directed.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Foundational knowledge of mechanical systems such as HVAC, compressed air, cooling water, and building services.

  • Working knowledge of relevant safety regulations and engineering standards.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain technical documentation.

  • Sound analytical and problem-solving skills with guidance.

  • Ability to follow defined engineering procedures and practices.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Experience or familiarity with 2D and/or 3D CAD tools.

  • Basic understanding of piping and instrumentation diagrams and mechanical drawings.

Skills considered an asset for this position:

  • Exposure to nuclear facilities or regulated environments.

  • Familiarity with building codes, ASHRAE standards, or ASME piping codes.

  • Experience supporting construction or commissioning activities.

NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.

  • Typically, 2–4 years of relevant professional engineering experience, or equivalent.

  • Registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) in the province of British Columbia is preferred.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
