About the role

D-Wave is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Service Engineer to help build and support our growing fleet of quantum computing systems. In this role, you will join a collaborative team focused on maintaining system performance and delivering an exceptional customer experience.

This is a multidisciplinary, hands-on role involving mechanical, electrical, and cryogenic systems. You will be responsible for building, upgrading, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex quantum computing systems that support our Leap™ quantum cloud service. You will also work closely with R&D teams to improve system reliability, serviceability, and operational processes.

This position is based in Burnaby, BC, with occasional travel to customer and field sites. Participation in an on-call rotation supporting production systems is required. As a customer-facing role, strong communication and relationship-building skills are essential.

What you'll do

  • Participate in system builds, installations, upgrades, and maintenance
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain cryogenic and electromechanical systems in lab and field environments
  • Work closely with hardware and R&D teams to improve system design, reliability, and serviceability
  • Develop and improve service procedures, troubleshooting documentation, and incident response processes
  • Build strong working relationships with customers, partners, and host facilities personnel
  • Support production systems through participation in an on-call rotation

What you'll bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience supporting complex multidisciplinary electromechanical systems in lab and/or production environments
  • Strong foundation in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and electromechanical systems
  • Experience with scripting, PLC logic, or programming languages such as Python or C/C++
  • Strong critical thinking, troubleshooting, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams

Bonus points

  • Experience with cryogenic and/or high-vacuum systems
  • Understanding of networking protocols, IT infrastructure, and Linux/UNIX operating systems
  • Experience with P&IDs, fluid control systems, or electromechanical control systems
  • Current or eligible registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC
  • Experience providing technical support or contributing to technical product development

Additional requirements

  • Participation in an on-call rotation and willingness to work flexible hours during busy periods
  • This role requires occasional travel (approximately 10%) to customer sites across North America and Europe, including short-term work assignments in the United States. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada, able to obtain and maintain a valid passport, and eligible to obtain any necessary U.S. work authorization for temporary business travel or assignments in the United States.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearances as needed, including working on-site with highly secure and sensitive customers and completing background checks if required

A D-Waver's DNA

  • We look at the future and say “why not”; we see possibilities where others see problems or routines. We show the way ahead and are committed to achieving ambitious goals.
  • We practice straight talk and listen generously to each other with empathy. We value different opinions and points of views. We ensure that we connect outside as well as inside to learn from others and inspire each other.
  • We hold ourselves accountable for delivering results. We make decisions & take responsibility so that we can act & support each other.
  • As leaders we motivate & engage our teams to undertake beyond what they originally thought possible, by developing our teams & creating the conditions for people to grow and empower themselves through enabling & coaching.
