Job Title: Electrical Engineer (Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls)
Job Description
This role is a well-rounded Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EIC) position designed for an engineer who can take ownership of a broad range of responsibilities and help relieve existing workload on the team. You will lead electrical, instrumentation, and controls scope on projects, working across the full lifecycle from design through commissioning and post-startup support. The ideal candidate understands how an entire process operates, can integrate electrical and control systems seamlessly, and enjoys working on diverse, complex projects within a process environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead the electrical, controls, and instrumentation scope across multiple projects, ensuring technical quality and alignment with overall process requirements.
- Design motor control centers (MCCs), power distribution systems, and perform electrical load calculations to support process equipment and plant infrastructure.
- Develop and integrate instrumentation and control systems that align with process needs and performance targets.
- Lay out plant electrical infrastructure, including equipment placement, cable routing, and coordination with other disciplines.
- Program and troubleshoot PLCs and HMIs, with a primary focus on Rockwell / Allen-Bradley platforms.
- Prepare detailed specifications for MCCs, electrical equipment, and instrumentation to support procurement and construction.
- Coordinate with vendors, suppliers, and purchasing teams to select and procure appropriate equipment and components.
- Issue bid packages to electrical contractors and support the contractor selection process by reviewing proposals and providing technical input.
- Oversee electrical and controls installation in the field and ensure work aligns with design intent, standards, and safety requirements.
- Support site commissioning, startup, and system validation, ensuring systems operate as designed and meet performance criteria.
- Provide ongoing customer support and troubleshooting after installation, addressing issues and optimizing system performance.
- Execute retrofit projects within existing plant infrastructure constraints, ensuring minimal disruption and effective integration.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with other engineering and project stakeholders to ensure designs are manufacturable, compliant, and cost-effective.
- Contribute to a team-oriented environment by sharing knowledge, supporting colleagues, and helping drive continuous improvement.
- Take increasing ownership of projects over time, with the opportunity to mentor junior engineers as the team grows.
Essential Skills
- 3+ years of experience in electrical design engineering within a process environment.
- 3+ years of experience designing electrical schematics using AutoCAD.
- Demonstrated experience sizing and selecting instrumentation to be integrated into process systems.
- 3+ years of experience programming and troubleshooting PLCs and HMIs, with a strong preference for Rockwell / Allen-Bradley platforms.
- Hands-on experience commissioning systems and working on-site during startup and validation activities.
- Proficiency in creating and interpreting electrical schematics.
- Experience with instrumentation engineering and electrical design for industrial or process applications.
- Experience with Rockwell / Allen-Bradley automation platforms, including Allen-Bradley PLCs.
- Familiarity with P&IDs and their use in designing and integrating electrical and control systems.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.
- Ability to work effectively across the full project lifecycle, from design to commissioning and post-startup support.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with cross-functional teams, vendors, and customers.
- Ability and willingness to travel for site work, commissioning, and customer support within Canada.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- AutoCAD Electrical experience is an asset.
- Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code.
- Experience with thermal systems and thermal control strategies.
- Experience with burner management systems (BMS) is advantageous.
Work Environment
The role is based fully on-site in Surrey, BC Monday - Friday with every last Friday of the month off. The position requires travel on average about 10% to 20% of the time for site work (approximately once per quarter). Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Surrey, BC.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $48.07 - $55.29/hr.
