Senior Systems Engineer – Renewable Energy & EV Charging
Job Description
This role focuses on leading the architecture and design of advanced renewable energy and electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. You will own end-to-end systems engineering activities, including requirements development, design trade-offs, test planning and tracking, and hands-on verification and validation. Working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, you will help define what the product will do, ensure subsystems meet requirements, and guide the technical development of the product throughout its entire lifecycle. This position is ideal for someone passionate about solar energy, energy storage, electric vehicles, and developing world-class products that connect devices to each other and to customers.
Responsibilities
- Lead and own the decomposition of offer-level requirements into system and subsystem-level requirements, making key design decisions for features that span multiple engineering disciplines.
- Develop technical specifications for EV charging products, taking into account safety, performance, interoperability, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure EV charging products comply with relevant industry standards, including SAE J1772, IEC and ISO standards, and Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP).
- Apply systems development lifecycle and V-model-based techniques to develop system specifications, test plans, system integration strategies, and mission profiles.
- Design and integrate EV charging systems, including AC and DC charging stations, power electronics, communication protocols, backend management systems, hardware, and software.
- Collaborate with internal and external teams to develop hardware and software components for EV charging systems, including user interfaces, control algorithms, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G/V2X) functionality.
- Produce core systems engineering deliverables such as requirements documents, functional specifications, design verification test plans, DFMEA, and related documentation.
- Create and drive end-to-end integration and validation plans, and actively support the execution of these test plans.
- Perform cost trade-offs and design optimization to balance performance, reliability, and affordability.
- Cross-functionally define product capabilities and communicate product needs clearly to business and engineering stakeholders.
- Ensure subsystem implementation aligns with system-level requirements and product objectives.
- Conduct hands-on verification and validation testing of systems and subsystems.
- Write clear, structured documentation for designs, requirements, test plans, and troubleshooting guides.
- Use proven methodologies to troubleshoot and debug complex problems in complex systems.
- Present technical concepts and project status clearly and concisely to internal and external peers and stakeholders in both formal and informal settings.
- Collaborate as an excellent team player, supporting colleagues and contributing to a strong, cooperative engineering culture.
- Apply a structured approach to troubleshooting and problem solving across hardware, firmware, and software interfaces.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Engineering Physics, Computer Engineering, or Control Systems from an accredited university.
- 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, with demonstrated ownership of system architecture and design.
- Strong background in power conversion and power systems, with experience in solar, energy storage, electric vehicles, or micro-grids.
- In-depth knowledge of requirements development, decomposition, and tracking from offer level to system and subsystem levels.
- Demonstrated product development experience using standard systems engineering practices from concept through production, including certification and testing.
- Experience creating requirements, test plans, and acceptance criteria for complex technical systems.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant codes and standards, including NEC/NFPA, UL, SAE, and related industry standards.
- Experience working with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL) such as UL or CSA.
- Ability to write clear, concise, and well-structured technical documentation.
- Proven methodology for troubleshooting and debugging complex problems on complex systems.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to talk and present clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated collaborative teamwork capabilities and willingness to support team members.
- Structured approach to troubleshooting and problem solving in multi-disciplinary environments.
- Design, engineering, electrical engineering, systems engineering, and validation experience.
- Minimum 3+ years of experience working specifically as a systems engineer.
- Experience with requirements gathering at the systems level.
- Exposure to firmware, hardware, and Python scripting.
- Experience working with power electronics.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Interest in renewable energy systems, solar energy, energy storage, and electric vehicle technologies.
- Experience with EV charging system design and integration.
- Familiarity with Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) and other EV charging communication standards.
- Knowledge of ISO standards relevant to EV charging and power systems.
- Knowledge of NEC/NFPA codes for electrical installations and safety.
- Experience with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) functionality.
- Ability to influence decisions through clear communication and strong presenting skills.
- Confidence, self-motivation, and passion for working in an exciting, fast-paced, team-based design environment.
- Strong desire to contribute to next-generation technologies and world-class products.
- Ability to balance independent work with collaborative product development.
Work Environment
