Working under the direction of the Program Supervisor, Chee Mamuk, the Educator’s responsibilities include; contacting Indigenous organizations and communities across BC to promote, plan, arrange and facilitate/provide culturally appropriate, community based STI/HIV awareness, education and training events within the communities or organization; facilitate community based STI/HIV needs assessments; ensuring evaluation of Chee Mamuk program services and providing evaluation assistance for other community based STI/HIV programs/services; representing Chee Mamuk at professional development sessions and on advisory committees with Chee Mamuk partners; preparing monthly work plans and service reports; assist Program Manager in other duties as required.

What you’ll do

• Works both independently and in conjunction with Program Supervisor to plan, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate community-based workshops, awareness activities, best practice models, and specialized training courses that ensure the successful delivery of culturally sensitive HIV/STI education to Indigenous groups throughout the province.
• Reviews and updates Indigenous HIV and STI materials for currency and correctness to ensure effective program implementation.
• Plans, develops, produces, implements, and evaluates culturally sensitive programming and learning materials appropriate to BC Indigenous groups and communities on and off reserve.
• Provides consultation to Indigenous and other groups to reach decisions, develop, and implement strategies on Indigenous HIV and STI education and awareness.
• Represents Chee Mamuk on committees or advisory boards and/or presentations at conferences to professional groups (Indigenous and non Indigenous).
• Works both independently and in conjunction with Program Supervisor to manage contracts and grant expenditures for Indigenous HIV positive speakers and other relevant contracts.
• Participates in quality and safety initiatives, accreditation and other PHSA initiatives as appropriate.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

What you bring

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in a health or education related discipline from a recognized program is an asset or equivalent work experience
• Two (2) years recent related experience providing training, preferably with one (1) year experience teaching with Indigenous people & communities. Experience working with Indigenous communities and working with rural, isolated, and remote communities.
• Valid BC Driver’s License; be able to travel extensively and willing to work weekends/evenings and in adverse conditions.
• Must have Indigenous ancestry

Skills & Knowledge

• Broad knowledge and experience of instructional methods, curriculum design and development techniques.
• Broad knowledge of STI/HIV.
• Broad knowledge of Indigenous communities’ social, historical, jurisdictional, and cultural issues, and Indigenous views on health/disease/sexuality/wellness.
• Broad knowledge of population health and social determinants of health theory.
• Broad knowledge of BC Indigenous communities, organizations, and services.
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability in large and small group facilitation and public speaking and presentation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events, to problem solve, and to deal effectively with conflict situations.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and be self-motivated.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
• Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents – including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study – and how they intersect across the health care system.

• As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
