Make a meaningful impact by removing barriers and creating inclusive learning environments for students with disabilities.
The Student Accommodation Facilitator role ensures equitable access to education for students with disabilities. In this role, you will review documentation, develop individualized accommodation plans, and provide ongoing support to students regarding accommodation-related matters. Working within the framework of human rights legislation and institutional policies, the Facilitator collaborates with faculty and campus partners to effectively implement student disability accommodations. Additionally, the role serves as a key resource to students, faculty, and academic departments on matters related to individual student accommodation plans and related processes.
Key responsibilities:
- Develops and implements reasonable and appropriate individualized accommodation plans in collaboration with faculty by reviewing medical documentation, considering functional limitations and restrictions and applying the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Guidelines on Accessible Education, ensuring alignment with each student's unique accommodation needs and the university's policies and procedures.
- Ensures all stakeholders are aware of their responsibilities under the Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and Toronto Metropolitan University Policy 159.
- Provides information to eligible students on funding applications and appropriate services and equipment.
- Maintains accurate and confidential records in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), including writing confidential notes and handling sensitive student information with discretion.
Qualifications
To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required qualifications:
- Successful completion of a Masters degree in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Kinesiology, Nursing, Education, or a related field.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in postsecondary educational settings or equivalent.
- Previous experience working with adults with disabilities.
- Vulnerable sector check required.
- Experience in navigating emergent and urgent situations and coordinating referrals in response to complex disability related needs.
- Knowledge of a wide range of disabilities, including ADHD, ASD, Learning Disabilities, medical, psychiatric, sensory and physical / mobility, and best practices in providing academic accommodations.
- Demonstrated ability to review and assess medical documentation.
- Knowledge of Human Rights legislation in relation to persons with disabilities (Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act).
- Demonstrated ability to form partnerships with internal and external groups to advance the cause of students with disabilities.
- Knowledge of postsecondary educational settings, teaching / learning processes, disability issues relating to the academic environment, technology applications for the learning environment and supporting students with disabilities.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving and decision making skills.
- Strong organisational skills, and well-developed ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Good knowledge of word processing applications (Word), e-mail, as well as client management database systems and assistive technologies.
- Equivalent experience or a combination of equivalent experience and education may be accepted in place of education.
